Title: Christmas in July (Yankee Gift Exchange)
Post by: Jackal on 07/18/2017 05:59 PM
This thread is here to gauge if there is interest in participating in a July Yankee Gift Exchange.  If you don't know what that is, look in previous pass threads.

Ok, we have our list.

Each person will send 5 sticks.  These will be 2x $5-10; 2x $10+ and 1x Special stick.  The special should be something that is hard to find or special in some way; in other words, something that you would get excited by if you got it.

USPS has raised its flat rate boxes to $7.15.  Please paypal $7.15 to me at cigar.jackal@gmal.com to cover postage.

Jason, is this PP address correct?  I funded a few days back, and PP says that you have not "picked it up" whatever that means. I haven't seen that kind of message before.

Each person will send 5 sticks. These will be 2x $5-10; 2x $10+ and 1x Special stick. The special should be something that is hard to find or special in some way; in other words, something that you would get excited by if you got it.

Looks like a few people decided this did not apply to them.

Hard to argue the facts. And you're being generous on the Te Amo pricing. More like $3.60. I rarely get into passes anymore, and this is why.

Hey Guys,

There have been some complaints sent to me about the quality/ value of some of the cigars in this pass.  People have expressed concerns that many have put very good, high end cigars in the pass, while others have put some very low value cigars in the mix.  This has leant to some pics being very good and others being landmines.  Additionally, it isn't fair to those who contributed higher end sticks getting low end pulls.

I planned on everyone acting as adults and doing the right thing when submitting their puts.  The last thing that I wanted to do (or had time to do) was to check the values of each cigar as they came in.  I haven't purchased cigars in a number of years, so I do not know off the top of my head the value of an Illusione rothschild or a Te Amo, or even what a lot of the Camachos, lower end tats, etc. have been selling for.  I really did not think t6aht I had to be looking over people's shoulders.

Now there are a few ways that we can deal with this, and I would like for everyone to email their preferences so that they do not need to feel like they are being put on the spot in an open forum.  Once I see how the wind is blowing, we can make a decision on how to proceed.

Here are some possibilities:
Continue the pass as is
I can send the cigars that everyone contributed back to them
I can send the cigars that everyone contributed back to them and refund their shipping costs (eat the costs myself)
The people who sent in low end sticks can send replacements
I can make up the value of bad sticks by contributing sticks out of my collection

If anyone has additional suggestions please send them to me.

This pass was supposed to be fun for everyone.  I am sorry that it is not going as planned.

I also do apologize for lapses in my responses, as I have been unexpectedly travelling for work the last few weeks (I do not always get a warning fro travel).

Thanks

I do NOT think any of these problems should cost Jackal anything at all, the members that in my opinion "cheaped out" should man up and do the right thing. If they don't know who they are or what they did they should have never joined the pass in the first place. The rules are clearly spelled out and either a few people didn't read them or just don't care. This has been my favorite pass in past years. This year not so much. Even though Jackal is the moderator he should not have to "babysit" members on their puts. I am not going to lie, this is the kind of $hit that wrecks passes. Just my opinion.

I am like Jason in that I haven't purchased much recently... And most of what I buy is from the secondary market.  If anyone has any issue with what I have put in this, or any other pass... Please don't hesitate to message me...I will make it right!

Thanks, Jason, for running a fun pass....

I whole-heartily agree that correcting miss put cigars should not fall on Jason.  Likewise the rules were very clear on the values to be included.
This should be easily fixed by those who may have overestimated contributions

Let those that feel they need to step-up do so, and certainly, Jason should be doing nothing to make up for anyone.  I have a feeling those that short-played did so from not being in last pass and seeing the quality that was expected.  Always good to research a pass that has already occurred.  But I really don't think anyone was deliberately trying to screw anyone else.  Let's see what happens, but I say ride on, Jason don't stress over it.
Title: RE: Christmas in July (Yankee Gift Exchange)
Post by: Brlesq on 09/19/2017 05:57 PM
Completely agree with others. There is no reason for Jason to come out of pocket or out of humidor in this. My vote would be to have the people who put in cigars that don't fit the rules send replacements to the ultimate taker when it the pass is over, or maybe Paypal $5 to the guy that ends up with those cigars. (The PP option would be easier and cheaper for them and just resolves the issue.)

Here is an alternative plan that might be the easiest way out.
When all is said and done, the person who put the "out of price range" cigars take one of his choices he won and replace it for the person who ended up with the mis-put cigars

Example, and will use line U as an example since it has already been identified as one of the suspect puts.
So if nirab ends up with line U then the person who put line U would exchange one of his winning lines.  Let Jackal know ASAP when this is over so the substitution can be made on the initial shipment

.....Agreed Chuck.......I have already sent Jackal a suggestion (intention) of doing that or "stealing" back my "sub priced sticks"....I think we just need to get this back on track and I'll work my "blips" out in the end guys........AND - absolutely Jason does not need to be inconvienced by this "hiccup" any longer...JMHO.

Ok, I am back.  Crazy amount of work, but I managed to land a bit of a whale of an account (abut a quarter million in sales).  Let's just say it has to do with the #1 selling vehicle in the US for almost 2 decades.

Kevin is going to bow out of the pass.  I will have his pulls reassigned if that is cool with everyone.

Will assign the next pulls in the morning.

I take some of the responsibility for that f-up.  I looked up the Futuro on Halfwheel and saw it to be a limited run.

This closes the ill-fated Summer Exchange.

Definitely had some problems.  I will work on retooling the exchange rules before I try this again for Christmas.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and kept it going.  I will send out the sticks to everyone early next week.

I believe that the crack was there when it came in.

It is a 50+ year old cigar.  not surprising that it has been a bit beat up.
