Title: Detoxing new travel humidor
Post by: headfirst on 01/12/2018 07:18 PM
I finally got a travel humidor and am amazed how strong the chemical odor is.  And it seems like it's the foam more than the plastic itself.  Do I just air everything out?  What have you all done about this?

Thanks.

Try stuffing it with newspaper.   That usually takes the odour away or try putting dry coffee grounds in it.

Ground coffee grounds do work great for removing odors.  :bigthumbs:

Usually just opening up and setting it in the sun will take care of it also

Wash it out with dish soap. If it still smells you can use white vinegar.

This one came with the corrugated foam inserts and I think those absorbed all the new plastic smell, they are where the odor seems to be coming from.  Trying the coffee grounds trick but it sure doesn't seem intuitive to me, coffee has such a strong odor...

A box of baking soda will also absorb odors.

Mine finally arrived today, the "15 count Megilla" with zero off odors. I have bought several and never had a problem. You had me a bit worried when I read this post originally.

I just got a 15 count Herf-A-Dor travel humi and it has the same smell. I to believe it's coming from the foam inserts. Really strong.

I let everything air out for a week and it's not as strong but still there.  Trying baking soda now.  Let me know if you find something that works.

I've always stuck a little Spanish cedar behind the foam in mine.

Newspaper.  Fill that sucker up with newspaper, close it up.  A few hours later change out the newspaper.  Repeat.
