Title: CigarGeeks Fantasy Baseball 2018 - 5th Annual
Post by: StogieDad on 03/21/2018 07:28 PM
Hey geeks!  I have been asked to restart the league for 2018.  We are in a bit of a tight schedule so I need folks in if you are in!  Post in the thread and I'll get you added.  Same as last year, 10 sticks for the overall and 1 super-premium for the All Star leader.

Chuck and myself are in, who else?  We will draft on the eve of the opening night, auto draft.

Everyone but nirab has either confirmed back or confirmed out.  So we have nine teams and he would make ten.  After that we can still add but I would like to add in groups of two to avoid bye weeks.

New members have been sent an invite to join.  Let me know if you need anything.

I have many questions about draft order... to be asked on the Herf tonight.

Hopefully Chuck can answer, can't be on tonight.  But basically the draft order will randomize right before draft and it will auto draft by your preferences (or the default player list/preferences if not changed) until the teams are full.  If you go to the My Team tab on the website, it shows the draft is starting Wednesday and has links to change your player order and/or preferences.  So you can order players if there are certain ones you want to move up or down, and you can select if you would prefer to take a position by round or just let it pick best available (like you may want a starting pitcher for your first two picks, etc).  Hope this helps.

Go to your Team Page. Just right of your team icon, you will see Edit Auto Pick Strategy...click that and away you go! Look for extra catchers and little used utility players, along with 2 or 3 DH's...you will thank me later!!!  :lmao:  :shy:

 No operational secrets!

Post by: StogieDad on 03/28/2018 12:23 PM
So just a few things to consider (no operational secrets )

You get 12 starts from your pitchers a week, generally Monday - Sunday.  Choose wisely, as after the 12th start they don't count anymore.  You will see week one you get 19 starts though, as it is running Thursday all the way through the next week.

Watching waivers can find players to fill slumping spots and such.  But Fantasy Baseball does pay to at least check your roster everyday.  You can see categories such as Last 7, Last 15, Last 30 and season stats to determine if a rookie who started hot has cooled off, somebody that may have opened terrible or injured is now back and tearing it up, etc.

You can use your DL to get eligible players out of the way, but remember you have to have a roster spot when they come back.

Pitching is the art of fantasy.  Constantly being able to max starts and relievers in the game is huge on a weekly basis.  It will show you the probable starters by day by a small PP by their name.

Have fun, you will figure it all out pretty quick.

Ok, so I have 9 pitchers.  Only 4 of them are pitching this next 7 games.  So I ought to drop/pick up pitchers who are going to be starting to make up that 12 games?  Edit: just realized the 4 are my starting pitchers; makes sense the relievers won't be called up until they're needed.

The relievers have to be on your active roster on a day for their stats to count.  You can add/drop pitchers to fill games, you just risk losing any drops if they are picked up and you have to mind your starts.

Yea I apparently drafted 3 DL pitchers to start, one with a high pick.  This should be a fine mess to fix.

Yea i don't know about the pre-draft settings. I feel like it completely ignored mine. No pitcher until like 6 round and then it was a RP.

My infield is allstar everything else  :?:

Ditto
Ignored my instruction as well
Oh well

Play Ball!

I wanted starters more than relievers and set it that way but hey, no dice.  Got hosed.  At least I am not the only one.  But for my first attempt, I am going to have a ton of fun.  Always been a fantasy football guru, but never baseball so I am looking forward to this.

Good luck everybody and HAPPY OPENING DAY!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be adding a second owner to my team. This is due to the fact that I will be travelling for work again soon and also will be completely without internet for 2 weeks this summer during a backpacking trip in New Mexico. My co-owner doesn't have a stake in the cigars. I will be responsible for all payouts. He's just going to be there to help during the times I am unable to manage my team. If anyone has an issue with this, please speak now or forever hold your peace

I have a question for anyone that knows. How many games or how long does it take a player to qualify at an alternate position? For example, the Phillies are playing Kingery at 2b, 3B and OF, but on the site he is only listed as a 2B right now. I would assume that after X number of games at a given position, he would be listed at that position as well. Does anyone know how this works with the ESPN league?

I would think that the designation would become automatic after playing a game at a different position for scoring purposes.  I believe that I read somewhere that most of the fantasy sites go off of the official roster designation that the ballclub tags on a player on their roster.  The Phils have him tagged as 2B right now or as of the time they purchased his contract.

Still think that if there is activity at more than 1 position, then that player should become eligible at that position, at least for the fantasy league.

According to ESPN

"Games Played in the Current Season - Once a player has played 10 games in a position during the regular season they will have that position added to their eligibility. This means that they will become eligible for the new position beginning on the eleventh game in that position. These games do not need to be contiguous."

googled this from ESPN website

Player position eligibility is based on two criteria that must be met. Once the following conditions are met, the player's position eligibility will be modified to reflect this.

Games Played Last Season - A player must have played in a minimum of 20 games in a position to be eligible for that position. The exception is rookies, they will be eligible for the position in which they begin the season.

Games Played in the Current Season - Once a player has played 10 games in a position during the regular season they will have that position added to their eligibility. This means that they will become eligible for the new position beginning on the eleventh game in that position. These games do not need to be contiguous

I think if they're sent down for performance or if the main starter comes off the DL, you should be dropping them anyway.

I second that notion.  Being a football guy, it is tough to get out of the play by play mindset.  There was a GM in MLB about 15 years ago who was a college football player who said that it was tough for him to not get wrapped up in each play by play.  Baseball is a much longer slog.

Michael,

The site is definitely still taking Divisions into account. It looks like whoever is in first in each division will always be 1 and 2 in the standings, regardless of record. If you look at the standings, Cardinal Fan is #2 in the standings even though he has a worse record than you, Toilet Monsters and I. Also, he has lost head to head to both you and Toilet Monsters. At best he should be 4th in the standings now but that's not how it's showing.

Also, do you have any idea how a 3 way tie is broken? I'm trying to figure out how it came up with the You, Brian and I in that order and can't make sense of it.

Upon further review, it looks like Division winners are #1 and #2, then the two next best records get the other two spots.  I wasn't thinking of it that way, I was thinking that the two best teams in each division don't go.  So it is the Division winners and two wild card winners essentially.

There is only one tie breaker criteria listed in the settings, and that is head to head for seeding.  It doesn't show any other ones.

Is there any way to manually set the playoff teams if it came down to that? Like if the top 4 teams were all from 1 division, could you override the site and set your own matchups?

I wasn't thinking of it that way, I was thinking that the two best teams in each division don't go. So it is the Division winners and two wild card winners essentially. There is only one tie breaker criteria listed in the settings, and that is head to head for seeding. It doesn't show any other ones.

Is there any way to manually set the playoff teams if it came down to that? Like if the top 4 teams were all from 1 division, could you override the site and set your own matchups?

Not clear what you mean here Kerry, the top teams in each division should make the playoffs, just like real life.  Maybe that is what you meant and was more concerned with breaking ties to determine WC

From what you had said before, I thought it was your desire to have the top 4 teams make the playoffs, regardless of division since the divisions are arbitrary anyway. And since the site was not doing it that way, I was looking a method you could still maintain that, but if this is the way you want it to run, then everything is good.

QuoteStogieDad - 5/21/2018 5:03 PM I didn't change anything, must have been the default setting. But if you go look at projected playoff bracket it has 3 from one division and 1 from another.

Kerry that seems to be a week old. I am a game up on Card fan now.

Looks like I can call the All-Star game sticks, I have a 3 game lead with a week to go.  Yay me!

Keep it going, some great races going on.  6 teams are still within 2 games of that last playoff spot.  Should be a good ending to the year.

I will post pics of the All-Star and the rest and make sure if I am missing anyone this week.

Thanks again for playing guys!

So since our current last place Chris hasn't even logged in to the site since April, hasn't made any team adjustments since May and apparently hasn't sent cigars in I assume second to last should get the last place cigars.

I'm cool with that.  I sent him a PM a few weeks back and it has not been opened so I assume he didn't see the email.  If not received by the end of season I will leave bad feedback.  I have one package remaining besides him and we will be tied off.

Ok, last two weeks of the regular season and things are beginning to heat up.
Michael is a lock as is Brian H for the most part.  4 or 5 good teams battling for the last two playoff spots. Team Montana has come out of know where to either squeak in or play the spoiler roll.
