Title: First Pass of 2019 (In Progress)
Post by: 05Venturer on 12/09/2018 10:02 AM
I can't believe we don't have a single pass running currently. I would like to change that come January 2019 with the  'First Pass of 2019'.

I give it thru the holiday season to sign up and will plan to ship it out the first week in January. Read the rules if your good with em, sign up.

Use this link to return back to the Cigar Pass. (http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=cigpass;area=gen;boxpass_id=255)

This is going to another good one, Kent.  Funny thing is, I was thinking the same thing the other day when I noticed the pass queue was empty.  Can't say I have ever seen that on here.

I'd really like to join in on this.  I currently don't have any feedback, but did donate to the Cigars for the Troops Drive.

How exactly do I sign up?  By posting in this thread?  I didn't see any options to join on the Cigar Pass page.

It's been a while since I got on a pass, I'd like to join this one.  Man, do I have a lot of dog rockets to pass off!  Ok, ok, I have some interesting things that I'd like to share.  In the last couple years I've been stocking more long-time favorites and experimenting a little less with random stuff.

Not that far, only far at rush hour(s).   There are a bunch of places in that part of Phoenixland which I've never visited.   Once the pass gets going and the time is right, we can meet up at your local favorite, or maybe one you've been wanting to visit in a while.

Sounds great.

On the meetup...so many choices.  For high end, super nice, with great outdoor space, there's a place on High Street in Phoenix North.  Lots of great bourbons too.  Wife-approved as "perfect ventilation."  There's Cigar King in Scottsdale, which is BYO, simple, but very interesting and great staff.  Outdoor space is bring your own chair, indoor is furnished.  Midtown there's Don's, which is simple and small.

Crap, I was looking forward to my first Gurkha in years.  Oh, actually I think I got some spectacular ones in the CoM last year-ish.  Aside from the fake MSRP, the thing with Gurkha is that their awesome ones are right next to 50 of their crappy ones.

So this is my first cigar pass... What are the best practices?  Do we take pictures and post takes and puts, or is this supposed to be a secret?  Is it discouraged to put too nice a cigar in, as to keep the level as intended from the start?  Any classic faux pas newbs make?
Title: Re: First Pass of 2019 (In Progress)
Post by: Longhorn on 01/14/2019 08:43 PM
No need to post pictures - most cigars can be found in the database and there are plenty of pictures there.

Here's where you can see what's happening with this pass:
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=cigpass;area=history;boxpass_id=255

For an overview of the pass system, take a look here:
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=16

All passes have the same general rule: Don't water down the pass!  Your puts should be of equivalent worth as your takes and if you take an ISOM you replace it with another ISOM unless you've cleared it ahead of time with the moderator.

The moderator will establish the rules for benchmark pricing (Kent went with house rules) - CI, Famous, or other reputable online dealers.  Typically you use a single or fiver pricing if available. Otherwise, use box pricing to get to the value of a stick.

It is customary, although not required, to leave a stick or two in the pass marked as gifts for the moderator.

Great info Brad, just what I was looking for.  Sorry I was too lazy to look it up.  :-)

So presumably, the extra puts for those who had takes were for the moderator?  Assuming this is marked on the cigar, and not in the box pass system?

Extra sticks for the moderator are not listed in the puts and takes, there should be a separate bag marked for any donation to the moderator. (BTW Kent likes White Owls and Acids).
Extra puts are just Geek math.  Many people will add an extra into the pass just to help it grow

OK, so I feel pretty good about my takes and puts so far, but need some advice on the final one.

Takes:
Camacho Liberty 2017
Dunbarton Umbagog Corona Gordo
H. Upmann (Cuban) Magnum 46
Tatuaje TAA 2016 (6 1/4 x 50)

Puts:
Don Pepin Garcia (My Father Cigars) 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Robusto
Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Mi Querida SakaKhan
Partagas (Cuban) Serie D No. 4
Tatuaje Exclusive Series TAA 50th

So I'm on the fence about grabbing the Fuente Fuente OpusX Rosado Oscuro Oro PerfecXion No. 4 (5 1/4 x 42).
Halfwheel says it's a $16 cigar.
https://halfwheel.com/fuente-fuente-opusx-rosado-oscuro-oro-perfecxion-no-4/102245

Would a Davidoff Winston Churchill The Late Hour Robusto suffice for this?
Cigar International prices it at $16.60.
https://www.cigarsinternational.com/p/davidoff-winston-churchill-the-late-hour-cigars/2004598/

Just want to double check, as both cigars have varied pricing.  You can't buy that Opus alone, just in a big collectors sampler box...

I think that Fuente is a much tougher find than the Davidoff.

I agree, which is why I asked.  Pass says MSRP for MSRP, but that doesn't really take into account all the factors...

I'll leave it in, only other sticks I have that might be good enough are singles I haven't tried.

Kent omitted the other half, "msrp for msrp, rarity for rarity," is the full expression.  So you must match cost and rarity.  Its up to the moderator how much an over-put on cost makes up for rarity.

Hey Corey, looks like a bit of an under-put there.  Someobdy check my math, these numbers are off Famous-Smoke.com or other major retailers.

Takes
Drew Estate Liga Privada Unico Serie Dirty Rat $180/12 = $15.00 ea
Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Mi Querida SakaKhan $112/10 = $11.20 ea
Oliva Master Blends III Torpedo $246/20 = $12.30 ea
Studio Tabac Wrath $59.99/15 = $3.93 ea

Puts:
Crowned Heads La Imperiosa  Dukes $224/24 = $9.33 ea
E.P. Carrillo La Historia Toro $96.99/10 = $9.69 ea
Herrera Esteli Miami 2016 $130/10 = $13.00 ea or $3.00 ea given they've been blown out by JR.
Tatuaje Black Petit Lancero $153/20 = $7.65 ea

Most all those prices are box for box off Famous Cigars and none of your puts line up.  You might want to send a catch up shipment to Stogiedad if you already sent to box along.

Looking wherever I could find prices, mostly from CI:

Rat 13.4
Dunbarton 11.4
MB 13.8
Wrath 7.27

Miami 10.72
EPC 10.39
Dukes 9.70
Petit 10.00 2013

I didn't realize that I am 5 bucks off total.

Its not my pass and I'm not in it, so you would need to clarify with Kent, but typically each pass put and take must be equal or exceed the value of each cigar in the pass.  This is done one cigar at a time. Its not a total price of all the cigars, but a cigar for cigar comparison. So the take of the Wrath for the put of the Duke would be good, but none of the other 3 would match up using your price data above.  Again, check with Kent, but that is typically how passes work.

Bruce is correct, and as stated right in the pass rules " Not gonna be a stickler on price just do your best to match up dollar for dollar per cigar (NOT 2- $8 cigars for 1-$16 dollar cigar) I trust all my Geek friends"
I am not trying to be a stickler but it DOES need to be close cigar for cigar, over and done now I guess but just a reference for future passes. Carry On.

It's getting pretty close to Phoenix, any thoughts on a meetup spot and time?  I mostly work during business hours, but have a totally flexible schedule (I own the company).  I haven't been to Fox, Cigar King, or Talking Stick in forever.  There's also the place on High Street which is a bit farther from you, but super nice.  If this crap weather improves, they have a fantastic patio.  If it does not, Talking Stick has excellent heaters.  Cigar King sucks in bad weather.

Ostensibly the pass will arrive to me late next week some time, and I will only be available after working hours as well.  I'm actually planning a move over to Peoria later this month.  Going to go make a deposit on a house for rent today.  Let me do a little research on where to meet up, since I know Fox and Cigar King, but not Taking Stick or other west valley locations.

Pass received.  Will post puts/takes Monday and meet up with Calveraz this week for a herf and hand-off.

Good luck! Carlos is a much bigger partier than you. Ask him to take you out on the boat!

Hah, unfortunately we sold that a couple years ago.  Also, it's full on winter here.  So ready for this crap to be over.

I've got it.  Had a good time with Dan at a Drew Estates event.  It was like Christmas.  First, Dan shows up with a nuclear IED of a bomb pack for me.  Some top grade sticks, which included two favorites, and three I've never had.  Then I won the Drew Estates raffle for a huge aluminum and wood ashtray, and some other stuff.  I also bought enough DE sticks to get even more swag.  Then Pedro from DE sat down with us for drinks and bought a round or two.

Unfortunately yesterday was spent out at a new deployment from 7am to 8pm, and I didn't even look in the pass box.  I'm on it today, and might even get it to the PO before cutoff.

Damn!  Congrats.  I'll have to come by some time and check out the winnings!

Going to the PO right now, so it will go out today.  Sorry I didn't get it done yesterday, one of our guys was hurt on the job (minor but had to leave), I ended up going out to finish our new deployment.  Long week.  I look forward to smoking one of these shortly.

At only $8, the Warped that I put in there is a hidden value.  It smokes much better than its price.  Actually one of my few box buys recently.

Looks like the pass will hit Brian Monday, I am headed out of town Thursday and will be flying back into MSP on Sunday. Possibly a hand off Sunday evening on my way home from MSP depending on timing. If not may need to wait until the following weekend or ship to me.

Thank You to everyone who participated in The First Pass of 2019. It was a lot of fun.
A big thanks to all who added the extra bonus cigars, not necessary but very much appreciated from each of you.
I will try to have feedback for all left by the end of the weekend. Now somebody else get a pass started before I fire up another one dammit     .

Apollo's takes will be in the mail this weekend headed to the GWN.
