Title: RE: La Palina Cigar Review
Post by: DonM on 12/21/2018 05:51 AM
It was a cool morning by Florida standards at 56 degrees, rainy and windy with 80 percent humidity. I couldn't sleep.  So I put on some camouflage Fruit of the Loom sweat pants and a long sleeve olive drab Henley with my Camo bedroom slippers. I filled the teapot with water from my reverse osmosis water filter, demanding pure water for my coffee.  While the tea pot was getting hot on my white Hotpoint range, I ground some 8 O'Clock medium roast beans and put 4 scoops of the ground coffee in my stainless French press.  I poured the boiling water in the French press and let the coffee steep for 4 minutes like I always do, then poured a cup.  It is an excellent cup of coffee.  I decided I would smoke a cigar so I selected a La Palina Red label toro out of my humidor and took my HP laptop to the screened porch.  A bit cool outside and I had not put on any underwear, my Johnson caught a breeze so I turned on my single burner propane heater that is attached to a 20 gallon propane tank.  I cut my cigar with a Xikar Ultra thin cutter and lit it with a Xikar double flame lighter (I am unsure of the exact model, but if you want to know, I will research it).  I lit the cigar, it was good!  After a few pulls on the cigar, my propane heater started sputtering and started to go out.  Crap!  Luckily, I had a second propane tank.  I took a few minutes and swapped the tank out and re lit the heater.  Just in time, because my balls caught a draft and weren't toasty any more.  Back to my cigar and coffee.  Now my coffee is cold and my cigar went out!  I went back into the house and heated up my coffee in my Magic Chef microwave then relit my cigar.  Life is good, my coffee is hot and the La Palina Red Label cigar was good.  Halfway through, I could not detect any flavors of cardboard.  I usually use a Havana Saver for the last inch or so but this cigar didn't warrant smoking the last inch.

Thanks for reading my review

No problem, Stephen!  The coffee is Eight O'Clock whole bean coffee.  Medium roast 100% Arabica coffee.  Available at the local Ghetto Mart aka Walmart.  Do you have Ghetto Marts in the GWN?

Upon further research, the lighter is a Xikar ELX in silver

I think Don quit his job at the post office to become a writer for Cracked.

You are partially correct, Dan.  My last day at the PO was the 14th.  A decision I made and left in good terms.  I relinquish my title as Stampbastid

I'm curious as to what you were watching (or doing) on the laptop??? Watching one of  the 15 (give or take a few) yearly Christmas movies / episodes where you have all the dialogue memorized (so you can watch it in peace and enjoy the cigar with the volume down) or some good cigar porn - or maybe a Geekster podcast??? AND - smoke????? How dang much smoke - down to the PPM (part per million)............lol............enjoy your retirement!!

I will go out and purchase a La Palina Red Label Toro and some 8 O'clock coffee right now! Sadly, I do not have a French press, but I'll make do with my 12-cup capacity Phillips automatic drip coffee maker, using 3/8 of a cup of medium-ground coffee to make a full pot.

I was honestly kicking around the idea of doing that as a contest.

It's all about the preparation of our smoking session and if something gets out of alignment it can be devastating....something about the best laid plans of mice and men.  8 o'clock coffee is a good brand and while I lived in KC for years it was a staple every morning when I went to work.  Having a ritual is important to me esp. in the morning with coffee, FP, filtered water, some foo foo latte on top and sprinkle of  cinnamon.....transfer to my Yeti cup to keep it hot for the next hour or so while I smoke my morning cigar.  If anything gets out of order or there's a delay and things get out of whack I get anxious esp. when the wife starts barking out orders that interrupts my first hour of the day.....essentially like getting a case of blue balls....DON'T INTERRUPT MY COFFEE AND CIGAR RITUAL I tell her.
