Title: Welcome to the new CigarGeeks!
Post by: SenorPablo on 12/16/2022 10:52 PM
Well folks we finally made it here.  It's been a long road of development and testing over several years - with many starts and stops as life kept getting in the way.  We should now see a more modern, stable and better performing site along with all the latest security enhancements, including the long awaited HTTPS security.  This also moves us to a more modern, supportable, and extensible technology stack, which could lead to more new functionality being added easier and quicker.

Play around with it and get used to the new bells and whistles that come with it.  Try out the new @mentions available in posts now for alerting specific users.  If you come across any issues, please let me know.

Otherwise, enjoy!
-Paul

Hey, looks like we made it to the other side!  Layout seems to be intuitive and the site looks crisp.  Great job Paul!

Issue: While I was poking around, I deleted a cigar from my Wish List humidor, and while it deleted the cigar, it also kicked me out of my humidor.  I re-entered and deleted a second cigar with the same result.

Getting a "Database error" when trying to upload a picture to my gallery.  Same error when uploading the full size pic or after reducing it to the previous limit of 100 kb from the old site.

Hi @tuck0411.  I saw it come through.  The new system sends me alerts when errors happen - another nice benefit.  The one you were getting had to do with the size of the title being too large.  I changed the form so that it limits the size to match the DB.  So you should be good now.  Please let me know.

Another potential issue - under the "Cigars" menu when I click on the admin option "Unapproved photos" and view the results, then click on "Unapproved cigars", I get an error - "Your last search was less than 5 seconds ago. Please try again later." I don't want to try again later. I want to see the results now.  Why would it want me to wait until later?

Emails are not being sent by the system when a PM is received.  There are two settings for getting emails in this case - one for when a new PM is received and one for when a reply is received to a previously sent PM.  I have both boxes checked in my account settings and recently received a reply to a PM I had sent to another member but no email was received for this. It's possible this is working for when a new PM is received but I haven't personally hit this test case yet.

I seem to be getting emails both ways now.  It does seem like they might not be immediate.  Maybe the system queues them up and send them all at once every now and then.  also, did you check your spam folder.  I'm hoping with the new dedicated server and IP address we get less spam designations.

I thought the site was still down...the wildcard isn't in place for the domain name. Basically, going to cigargeeks.com won't resolve.  www.cigargeeks.com will.  Quick fix I am sure.

Great site!! Thank you for providing it.

Nice Paul. Some Pics vanished from the secret Santa thread. Post 53,60, and 62. Also noticed when clicking on the secret Santa thread it takes you to page one when on the old site it took you to page three right away? Lastly, can't find the exit button to exit my own posts.

Okay I figured out I wasn't signed in. However, I still can't figure out how to edit and or remove my old posts to get my name off the front page. Also still find g that clicking on threads takes me to the first page rather than the last page. Or was it always like that?

I just posted a reply to Bob's query explaining how to post pics here and when submitting it it gave me a warning about how three other replies had been posted while I was composing my reply and that I may want to review my reply before posting. I didn't want to do that so left the page, then I find that my reply wasn't posted.  Very annoying. Not going to go to the trouble of re-composing that explanation, so hopefully Bob can figure out how to do it...

You uncovered a feature I did not want.  Apparently Guests can post to the forum.  That has been removed.  I also moved your posts to under your account.

Senor Pablo,
I had a career in web development project management, so I fully appreciate the amount of work that went into this platform move and subsequent data translation. Well done, and thank you ever so much for your blood, sweat, and tears to pull this off!

Looked into this further and it seems that they are links to images sitting on another site.  The links are using HTTP, where as our new site is using the secure HTTPS.  The browsers are now blocking mixed content (or more specifically the browsers are blocking HTTP content when they are linked to a site being served via HTTPS.)  Hopefully that makes sense.  If not, reach out.

It is possible you have reached this page because:

The IP address has changed or
There has been a server misconfiguration or

I have cleared all my history and cookies on both devices but still can't get to the site?

I was referring to the one entry of Otter's post #53.  It is missing images and the cause was what I described earlier.  60 was just a requote of 53 - so same issue.

62 was your post.  I re-ran a partial import of those and they showed up.  I don't see any of your images missing now.

Thanks for helping find these things!  We're getting there...

Not sure about this one with respect to tablets.  I don't own any.  But, I have seen this before on windows laptops and it always went away once I cleared the browser cache and cookies.  I would suggest making sure you are clearing everything correctly, then do it again, then restart the device.  Hopefully that is it.

Seems I'm able to get here on my work pc. At home on my Windows laptop I get the Sorry page. I cleaned everything as far as I know but still only get that. Tried 3 different browsers. I'll have to dig a little deeper. Does Windows keep cookies and a cache someplace other then in the browser specifically. Seems odd that no matter what I do, 3 different browsers end up on the Sorry page.

I'm technically challenged and that could be part of the issue.

Very odd.  But you aren't the only one apparently.  Try opening a new browser window in "Private" or "Incognito" or whatever equivalent mode they have.  They should ignore any old cache, cookies, etc...  I'd be curious if that helps it.

Might be DNS caching on whatever internet provider servers are being used. If that's it, it should clear up over time.

Two issues...
 - There doesn't seem to be an easy way to look at one's own profile page.  The old site had a "My Profile" button on the left side of the home page along with all the other buttons that were there.  This site doesn't have that and it's not listed under the account menu at the top left. The only way I've found to look at this page is to look yourself up under the member list and click on your name or to find a post you've made in the forum and click on your name there.

- There seems to be no way to look at feedback, either your own or anyone else's.  There was a "View feedback" link on the profile page at the old site but there isn't one here.  And I don't see it anywhere else, either.

It's late and I'm tired, which probably means I'm just blind and can't see this stuff.  I hope so and thanks in advance to anyone who can point out where these two things are at.

I wonder if the issue is with my internet provider. I always use incognito or Firefox with the settings to clear everything when I close out. I get a notice that the site certificate and something don't match and it's considered unsafe.

I sent a request to my provider to deem the site safe, but who knows if/when that'll happen. I'll see if I can get some screenshots to you.

So for seeing your profile, click the dropdown with your name at the top left.  From there you'll see an option for "Profile Details".  That will bring up the form to edit your profile.  To see your full profile, click on the "Profile Info" tab.

For the Trades Feedback, I added it to the same Account menu popup in the top left.  You'll also see it listed as a menu option when you are in your Profile.

Good suggestion to make that Trader access easier.  Hopefully that helps.

-Paul

The "Profile info" tab, that's what I was missing last night, thanks.  Found the feedback, too, although I'd suggest labeling it "Feedback" instead of "Trades".  Actually, it might be good to put a big "Feedback" button at the top of every page.  It's hard enough to get folks to leave feedback around here without making it hard to find, too.

So, if I'm looking at someone else's profile info page, I can see their feedback stats, ie. number of positives and negatives, but I can't see the actual feedback.  I can see my own feedback from my own page, but I'm not seeing any obvious way to view someone else's feedback.

It is not very obvious, but you would click on the Trade Count number to see all the feedback.  I added an additional link next to it that should make it more clear.  Thanks for the feedback!

@SenorPablo The site looks fantastic!  You and the others who did testing here did a bang up job.  It keeps the classic look of the original site with a really nice up to date functionality.

Still can't access the site on any of my three devices. I am on my wife's laptop. Why do her devices access the site but not any of mine? I cleared out the cache, cookies, and history on all three of devices and restarted them all to no avail. I'm stumped and completely frustrated.

My devices:

1. iPhone 6 plus
2. Acer Chromebook 11
3. Fire HD 10 Tablet (11th Generation)

Hi Pete.  The URLs you have in the images seem odd.  They are not valid for our site.  What if you manually type www.cigargeeks.com?

I just tried that on all three devices and I get back the same message with exactly the same url. I even tried http// and https// and i still get the same answers. I also just wrote my geek critique review and apparently I lost it because I was automatically signed out and could not submit it  :banghead:

Here's an odd one... when searching my humidor for a particular cigar using the "Search Humidors" field, if the cigar name has an apostrophe in it, the result comes up as "You do not have any cigars in your Current Inventory."  For example, I have a cigar in my inventory with the brand name of "Don't Tread On Me".  If I search for the entire name, or even just "Don't", I get "You do not have any cigars in your Current Inventory."  However, if I search for "Don" or "tread on me", the cigar comes up in the search results.

I guess there's two issues here - the apostrophe throwing off the results and the fact the text is incorrect.  It should say something like "You do not have any cigars by that name in your Current Inventory."

And it may be that an apostrophe is not the only special character that would cause this, but it's the only one I've tried.

I've had the hosting guys looking into it as well.  they don't see anything misconfigured and swear that the issue we are seeing is always a cache issue.  I know I did see it on my devices and by clearing the cache it went away.  So I can't see the issue on any of my devices anymore.  I also had my kids check theirs and a few devices needed to have the cache cleared and it worked after that.

I don't know how all the various devices caches get cleared but the only thing I can think of as well as the hosting guys is that the devices are not really clearing the cache and cookies and history.  Really all 3 need to be cleared.

When I go to the cigars page:   https://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?action=cigars

And select "Man O' War" from the brands list, and click on search, the following message displays:  "No cigars were found that matched your search criteria."

The only way I can get the Man O' War database entries to return is to type "man o" into the keyword search.

It doesn't like apostrophes.  There is a brand called "420's" which won't return anything, either, when searched. It appears to be the only special character that does this.  I've tried brands containing parens, exclamation points, periods, percentage signs, hyphens, and accent marks without seeing any issues.  This also happens when searching your humidor.

The email settings are not working.  I've got all the boxes checked to receive an email when each thing happens and I have not received a single email as of yet.  You can't see it in the pic, but I've also got the box checked farther up the page for "Receive forum newsletters, announcements and important notifications by email."  This could be a problem when someone who doesn't log in regularly has been PM'd an invite to a pass or a Geek Critique or something else of similar importance.

When viewing the feedback page for a member one of the columns is headed "Detail" and then there is a "View detail" link for each line.  When you click on this link you get a page that you'd expect to show the details of that particular feedback, but all it says is "Detailed comment" with no actual details.  The old site would show you the comments that were left but there are none here.

The Calendar did not make it, but it could.  There is a calendar function in the system.  What did folks use the Calendar for?  Anything more than birthdays?

The "who's online" can be found at the bottom of the Forums index under "User Online".  If you click that link it takes you to the list.

Go into your Profile and then on the Forum Profile menu pull down go to "Look and Layout".  You can set your time zone there.
