I am wanting to try roasting some of my own coffee at home, I decided to find a hot air popper, and get some green beans to start out with.
The hot air popper, no problem, I'm going to go garage sale shopping first, then hit a department store if I can't get one at a garage sale.
The open question is :
Where do I get green beans to roast ? any recommendations ? I don't want to buy a 50lb bag to start off, just a small amount.
Not sure where to get the green coffee beans, but I use a hot air popper all the time....would it not be too hot? Might the popper burn out before the beans are roasted?
Recipe for green beans:
Fry up four strips of bacon - remove bacon.
Using grease, add finely chopped onion. Caramelize onion.
Add green beens (I use french cut).
Add enough water to cover all green beens.
Boil.
Strain.
Eat.
Hope that helps.

Green beans and bacon grease! An unbeatable combination! That was the first thing that entered my head too when I saw green beans but I didn't want to be the first to fire on it.
Say the post and my first thought, I f*ckin hate green beans. Then I see you talk about coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker so can't help you there.

Geez Brent...what good are you then? :shades:
Beats me. Locally, I just get pre-roasted beans from the local grocery. A local distributor maybe? If you know one.
You can order them off of the internet if you search for green coffee beans. There are several roasting companies that will sell them green. As a cigar geek, I'm sure you're familiar with internet orders... :shades:

Half of my mom's recipes started with frying bacon and caramelizing onion. Mmmmmm, good eating. :dancing:
I did the coffee roasting thing a few years back with a hot air popper, and it worked just fine. The only drawback to it was the smoke and the chaff blowing all over the kitchen. I found that a fan blowing out the window handled most of the smoke, and a damp paper towel in the bottom of the catch bowl helped keep the chaff from blowing around too much.
As I said, I haven't done it in a while, but at the time, I dealt with Sweet Marias http://www.sweetmarias.com/index.php
I never had any problems with them.
They also have some pretty good tips and "how to" sections on their site.
Coffee and bacon...I'm hungry now. Excuse me for a moment.
Mmm. Bacon wrapped filet mignon with a side of green bean casserole!

Kyle, no, the hot air popper is suppose to work pretty good for a poor man's coffee roaster. The roasters made for roasting coffee beans run between $120 and $200 dollars.
I figured I would try the hot air popper before investing in a real roaster....... but Iwill need some beans that haven't been roasted yet.
I will let everyone know how this works out

Thanks Dennis, I took a look at that site, and it looks like just what I wanted.
I'll let you know how I make out roasting my green beans !
I think I'll leave the BACON out of these beans though
My search at garage sales is turning up nuthing for a hot air popper.
I found some dishes for the daughter in law, a cup and saucer for my wife, a keyfob for a friend, and a vacuum cleaner for my son. All totaled I've spent $45.00 now looking for a hot air popper at garage sales.
Do any of you have a hot air popper you wanna sell ????? I'm gonna go broke looking at garage sales for one
Ken, see http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=5985.0
I second the recommendation for sweetmarias.com.
I use the iRoast 2 roaster, works great! I roast outdoors.
After careful consideration, and reading some other threads on this site, I decided to order some coffee from sweetmarias.com. The website is a little..... sub directory confusing, but the site information has an overall friendly and pleasant feel to it.
Looking forward to getting their coffee's and roasting some. I think I read every article posted throughout their site.... some articles I read twice.
I encourage everyone to try home roasted coffee..... it is delish !!

Digging this thread up...My beloved wife of 18 years bought me a Fresh Brew SR500 home roaster for my upcoming birthday so I'm doing some research regarding coffee beans.
I'm familiar with Sweet Maria's site, but was wondering if you guys have any other favorite sites to purchase beans from. Also, I prefer to make drinks using espresso, so I need to find a good bean to burn up in an espresso roast!
I can't wait to start roasting my own beans! My friend has an I-Roast (gen 1) and sometimes makes me espresso beans, and they are the absolute best! Nothing available in the store even comes remotely close.
Man, a good woman is hard to find!

And yes I know this is an old thread, however the above might be applicable to:

Southern cooking, every thing tastes better with bacon, you just got to love it. :lmao:

So true. My mother is a fantastic cook - the only person that can beat her in the kitchen is her mother. No, the food isn't very good for you, but it sure tastes good! ;-)
My mother's side of the family is from west Texas, and a lot of the food we ate had a midwest and/or Mexican influence. Growing up in GA, some of the classic "southern" food they cook here turns my stomach.
