Title: Lighters and Cutters
Post by: Feynix on 10/16/2010 04:21 AM
What do y'all use?

I currently have a crappy single torch but every time I'm at teh cigar shop I wish I had bought a nice triple torch...the one there is so much nicer to light with.

And my cutter? Some cheapo...I think it came free with a sampler from CI lol. Most of my cigars it barely cuts. Getting ready to upgrade that however.

I use an Honest double torch lighter.  If I punch, the lighter has a punch on it.  If I cut I use a Colibri Grip Diesel Cutter.

I saw a colibri diesel on CI and was thinking about picking it up. Might look around some more to see if I can find one with a lighter combo!

Get any lighter you want to look at and admire but get a Ronson JetLight to actually use.  I love mine and still have two left in case the first one breaks, which it has shown no sign of doing for almost two years!  I got two twin torch cheapo Nibos in samplers from Cigar.com a couple of years ago,  One just recently folded so I started using the other one.  Those lighters work great on the larger ring cigars.  So make a choice...do you want a $60 Xikar to admire or a Ronson JetLite for $5 with $55 left to buy cigars?

I started out with a cigar store free cheap double bladed guillotine cutter.  I used that until I got a couple of free ones in the same sampler the lighters came in from Cigar.com.  I used those until this past Christmas when my wife gave me a Xikar MTX Multitool.  Shortly thereafter I bought a Xikar Xi2 from lowpro.  Both are excellent tools and will last for a good long time.  Or, you can use the cheap free ones just as effectively and have money you can use to buy cigars.  Your choice.

However....if I purchase a backpack flamethrower and a katana, I'd have the lighting and cutting taken care of...the two items together would intimidate others into giving me free cigars. This seems to be a more cost effective approach :D

The Auction sites usually have some really good deals.  I have about 26 lighters ranging in price from the Ronson to the ST Dupont.  My favorite lighter so far is the Xikar Exodus which has a lifetime guarantee and won it off CBID for $25...it's a soft flame that works like a torch..windproof.  Cutters are something that we usually have our own opinion about....V cut, punch, guillotine and there are good ones and not so good.   I'd say that if you buy one there are those with a lifetime guarantee as well and that is probably the way to go...buy it one time and not worry about buying another one again.

I had gotten the Xikar Exodus and absolutely love it, I paid 60 for it but it was because my other (cheapo) lighter had broken and I was leaving for vacation the next day! Needless to say I ran down to the local cigar store and bought that Exodus I've been eyeing for awhile! I'm quite happy with it as it works perfect and as Alphairon put it, it has a look and admire it quality.

As for a cutter what I currently have is a double guilitine vector cutter. (nothing special)

I use a cutter to clip the head, and a lighter to torch the foot.  I tried it the other way around and it didn't work so well...

Seriously, though, I use a cheap Ronson Jetlite I picked up at CVS or one of three CigarSavor lighters I got with samplers from Cigarfox.com most times.  All are single torches that get the job done.  As for cutters, I've got a nice Colibri Firebird cutter that was a gift from Junglepete and a handful of cheaper double guillotines.  The latter aren't fancy, but again, they do just fine.  I tend to lose things and live with two sons who are also smokers (I'm actually surprised I've managed to keep up with what I've got for as long as I have), so I don't want to commit a bunch of money for something I see as "utilitarian" in nature.

I have 2 blazer venture two-torch lighters that I like using as well as a Jet-Line triple torch with the clear tank and one that looks like it was made by vector for another brand, but it's a triple torch with a cigar punch on the bottom. I have a Cigar Savor punch but I prefer one of the two Xicar X2 cutters. I tried the regular double guillotine with the finger holes, but the Xicar is more comfy to hold and use.

I have a few cutters, Xikar Redwood, MTX scissors, and a newly acquired Palio.  I really like the Palio so far over the others....A RP triple flame at home and the ol trusty Ronsons, you cant beat them for the money

Lighter - at home, I use a Harbor Freight torch.  For $6, you can't beat it since it is more or less the same thing as the higher end models you see at cigar stores.  When I'm traveling, I use Ronson Jetlites, although I have a newly acquired Tiger lighter (thanks Bruce!) that I plan on trying out soon.

Cutter - Palio and Xikar.  Palio provides a much better cut, but the Xikar is more durable.

With teenage boys traipsing through the house all the time, and my own inability to keep track of small objects, I spend as little as possible on implements.

The auction sites have become a great resource for $1 or less cutters. I don't mind replacing those!

I haven't bought lighters online yet. There are plenty of cheap or on sale for cheap (like < $10) lighters out there.  I got my current no-name triple torch for just under $10 and it has worked just fine for about a year now.

Don't forget about a decent ashtray too. I got mine free with a sampler order on cbid. Sometimes you can snag one for cheap on the auctions too.

Xikar cutter, all the time.  Never fails me.

On the go I use a Jetline Grenade triple flame lighter.  At home I use a Vector Tripump Table top lighter.

For me it depends on the cigar. I have the Colibri VCut and the Cuban Crafters perfect cut. For lighters, I have a single flame Xikar, 3 flame  flat jet Vertigo, and a  Lotus triple flame table lighter...

I agree with Ken on the reliability of the Ronson JetLite.  It's a great lighter and I have several.  I actually buy them for my wife...a cigarette smoker...blech...I do it to keep her from stealing mine...and since she always loses lighters... I definitely make sure she is not stealing mine...lol  For my use, they are guaranteed to work in a pinch.  But I like my multiple flame lighters more.  I have not had the best luck with Xikar lighters...others have...Great looking lighter...but never lasted long for me and after a couple times getting it replaced...it just became a hassle...I have had GREAT Success with the Jet Line Lighters...I have a bunch of Quad Flames...Reliable, look good, relatively inexpensive, and they perform.  I am not the biggest fan on the reliability of their Table Top lighters though...So I use my Alec Bradley Bunson Burner....lol...at least that is what I call it...

While I have not had success with their lighters.  I have found the MOST success with Xikar cutters.  I have an Xi4 (cheaper model than the 1 thru 3) That works Great.  and I have a carbon fiber (real not simulated) super low profile guillotine (it isn't the X8 though).  I have a a Cuban Crafters guilllotine that works well for me too.  I have not been impressed with the Collibri cutters save one.  I like their V-Cut and am looking to get one of those or the Xikar V-Cut...Another I wouldn't mind trying is the Lotus Jaws...

OK you bastard.....This thread got stuck in my head and in my last drunken CBid run, I have now added a Colibri V-Cut, and a Palio to my collection...Or I will as soon as they are shipped....I was lucky to lose out on several other Lighters and Cutters...LOL  Damage not overly bad overall, but boy it could have been A LOT worse...LOL

I have had bad luck with Xikar lighters recently. Every one I own is the replacement from a previous purchase and have even threw away a few cheap ones. I do have a Ronson and 2 Alec Bradley double flames that have outlasted the Xikars :(

Double guillotines from S.T. Dupont (maxi-cutters, credit card), Duhill sterling silver double guillotine & punch, Davidoff small stainless steel scissors, Avo black and gilded gold double punch, Elie Bleu Double Guillotine, Cyril Brizard cocobolo punch, many Xi1/2/3's Xikar XO, Xi11 punch, brushed silver vx, Colibri V-cutter, BOTL Palio, and a myriad of other no name cutters.
A ton of crapped out Colibri lighters from earlier on in my Cigar life, a Prometheus in-line triple jet torch, 3 Maxijets, an ExII Havana Yellow, 3x Ligne II's, a gatsby, a petit Ligne I, a rollagas, 2 uniques, a kiribi kabuto, two or three AB's... a couple KGM-Vector's, and some odds and ends here and there....

I'll be blunt, Dupont's are expensive, but they offer the best bang for the buck imo, I bought my first one back in early 2007 from Bonita's for $350 on special, hasn't required any servicing to date, I prefer a soft flame over a torch hands down, and I've got a lot of torches, and with their recent release of the multi-fill canisters, well yes the fuel is still not cheap. However on average I can light 100 cigars per charge, so three-four refills a year is all one those three will need per annum. I like accessories almost as much as I like cigars.
