Last year I hastily put together a Secret Santa Gift Exchange. It met with pretty positive results and a lot of very nice cigars being sent. This year I wanted to give it a bit more time to allow for holiday shipping.
http://www.cigargeeks.com/index.php?topic=4023.0
Here is how it works. Each person will be assigned a person to make a 5-pack for. Please look at their posts, virtual humidors, etc to see what they might enjoy. One cigar in the pack should be designated as the New Years Smoke. On New Years Day everyone can light up their New Years smoke for one big virtual herf.
No one will know who is shopping for them until they get their surprise package.
Please use this thread to let me know if you want to be part of this. Veteran members and above please. I will have this open for sign ups until the middle of November.
Hell yeah! That was awesome last year! I'm in!!!

Sounds great! I'm in. Thanks for coordinating this, Jason.
I would like to be, but things are going to be tight this year so unfortunately I'm going to have to pass on this. :-(
Count me in as well. Thanks for coordinating this again.
Count me in too!
Is there a price goal or range we should be thinking of?
I'll do it again!

Great idea Jason! However, count me out as I will still be out of the country.
I'm in....as long as I can mail the package before December 15th (Go back to Canada for xmas)
I'll do it. Sounds like fun!
Count me in! Thanks for hosting this Jason.
Jason, I'd like to participate.
Looks like we are getting a great response to this. Anyone else want to join?
It might be helpful for all Secret Santas if everyone participating in this put a few cigars into their "Wish List" humidor, too.
No guarantees that any will get fulfilled, but just like kids at Christmas that write a letter to Santa about what they want, it can't hurt!
I'd like to play. Thanks!
I missed participating last year.. so count me in this year!
Oh, why the heck not. Count me in.
I'm in if there is still room.
This is far bigger than last time. I can't wait!

I had a couple of people ask if there are some guidelines as to price, etc.
Since we have a few weeks before things need to ship, I will put it out for discussion.
My belief is just to use the golden rule. Send 5 cigars that you would be thrilled to get. However, do a little research on your target via his reviews, virtual humidor, postings to today's smokes to see what he likes.

Here is what we could do, send 5 of your best and a couple of your worst. Then if I get Bob, I could do my best to send him something nice along with a couple Thompson $1 cigars. I like the idea of the white elephant. So, along with the5 good sticks, I will throw in a lump of coal, suitable to give to that brother in law or other cigar mooch who likes to bum a cigar off of you.

Me too. Great idea to include a lump of coal with the Secret Santa. Makes it even more fun to hear the recipients reactions!
But do 6 cigars fit comfortably into a USPS small Priority box? If not, maybe we adjust this to be 4 good ones for Secret Santa (one of which is really special for New Years) and one 'lump of coal'. Just a thought, but it should be a group decision before packages are put together so that everyone is participating by the same rules.
Any thoughts?

Ack. :-( Just finished sending out all the names when I read the end of this thread. Sorry.
Everyone should have gotten a private message from me telling you who your recipient is. Let me know if there are any problems or anything.
Suggestion:
For those participating, it would be very helpful to each other if we all opened up our virtual humidors for a short time. Of course it is possible to gift a 5 star cigar based on reviews and forums, but I'd rather gift a 5 star (4.5, 4 whatever) cigar that the person does not already have a dozen of them sitting in the humi.
Any thoughts?

Not a bad idea, Pete, and for some people that might be a good option. But I, for one, do not keep much in my virtual humidor (maybe 20% of what I really own). Others keep ISOMs in there and do not want to open up the door to scrutiny.
As suggested earlier, there is a Wishlist Virual humidor that folks can use to put in a list of things they might like to try. Just another idea.
I believe that the wishlist is the best route. Previous reviews pose a problem because some of our members don't post a lot of them, and the virtual humidor poses a problem because not everyone keeps it up to date. Just my .02.
I got the name of my recipient on the Secret Santa gift. In view of all of the names on the list, it would in my opinion be difficult to select a great gift cigar for anyone, my recipient included. I am going to do the best I can with the idea he or she will not be disappointed
I'll add to my wishlist to help. Very excited for this!
Hmm...all good points. I guess I'll make a wish list. Nah...I have no idea what I want and it takes the element of surprise away for me. I'll post my humis for now...I have two...one in Florida one in Quebec and it seems that they become merged for viewing.
Hey everyone, a note on Wishlist humidors: If a member has marked their Virtual Humidor as "private", but their Wishlist Humidor as "open", you will NOT be able to find their Wishlist Humidor by clicking on the Humidors link on the left (no humidors will appear for that member at all).
However, if you click on the member's name or profile, you can then view their Wishlist Humidor by clicking the link at the bottom of their profile page that's called "View this Users Virtual Humidor".
Just a heads up so you can find these Wishlist Humidors.
So... Is there a general time frame in which we should send these out like a specific date range etc.?

Reading people's posts gives you a lot of insight on what they like. Also, if they have participated in the PIF, you can really get an idea from their PIF wishlists.

You've hit it, Don! The idea isn't to fulfill the recipient's wet dream cigar fantasy. We have the Wish List thread for that very reason. This exercise is a gift exchange between friends and the gifts should be given and received in the appropriate spirit of the occasion.

They should be sent so that they have enough time to get to the recipient by Christmas.
The invites were sent out early because some people have some upcoming travel schedules that made them need to get things in order early, and there is some delay getting posts to and from Les (especially in the holidays).
Pete, does your Santa need to ship to you by a certain day to catch you in Florida?

Good to see they made it! The unbanded cigar is the lump of coal, but I took the band off for a reason. I want you to smoke it and report back before I reveal the identity.

Hey Nathan, what is the unbanded cigar.
From the looks of the others, it must be the lump of coal.

I can do that, I'll let you know when I've smoked it.
I got home late tonight, and discovered that Santa had made an early stop by the mailbox. Santa tried hard to be real Secret, and I had to do a little detective work to figure out who was behind this astounding postal drop.
BlackIrish (Eddie) really out did himself, and taught me a thing or two about being a Santa. Look at those beauties. And I am pretty sure there's some elven in this man, because he completely ignored the fact that COAL is SUPPOSED to be BAD!! Now I will have to figure out some other form of penance, since my lump of coal is only black, and not bad.
Here are the beauties ...
- DPG My Father Le Bijou 1922 Toro
- Dunhill Aged Dominican Condados
- Arturo Fuente Hemmingway Work of Art Maduro
- El Triunfador #6 (Lancero)
- Partagas Churchill de Luxe (from Nov '99, for New Years Eve)
- Murcielago Belicoso -> lump of coal because it's black not because it's bad
Forgive the lousy photo ... the phone camera hasn't been doing so well lately ...

A very generous Christmas present.
WOW, Eddie, nice presents! Armin, enjoy those!
Nice Job Eddie.

Great job, Eddie!

Oddly enough, that's the design of the wrapper. No band, just the colored wrapper "band".

I'm also glad these made it before you skipped town. Have a great Christmas up north.

I got these goodies in yesterday's mail from Secret Santa Shukpaw (Neil), along with a very nice Christmas card that reflects what the holiday is truly about.
This haul includes six of my favorite cigars, several others I've been wanting to try, and what appears to be the ugliest lump of coal I've ever seen (top left).
Neil, thank you, and Merry Christmas!!!

Don't worry about it! That's not the first time somebody on this forum has stepped in it. There was this one guy, one time, who panned an Anejo in a blind tasting. Hard to believe, but true!

Didn't we all just have this issue a couple months ago? WTF!?!?!? How does the post office expect people to keep using them if they can't get their s**t together. How long have they been doing this? Like...forever almost!
Yep...there is a reason that the USPS is FAILING!!! And they deserve to. They all deserve to be out of work because they don't deliver the service that is required for them to continue...that and they have a bloated system that is inefficient. Hope they're all out of a job and the whole Postal Service is getting a revamp by next Year. Sadly that probably wont happen. Damn PO....

I Went by the old house yesterday evening to pick up the mail and found a nice package in the mailbox from Paul. First let me start by saying that I apologize for not being able to post a photo at the moment as I can't find the USB cable for my camera as it appears to have been misplaced in the move. I know the increased satisfaction and impact that a photo adds to a post such as this and hopefully I'll get a pic up soon. Until then, however let me tell you that this gift exceeded any hope or expectation that I had for any Christmas gift this year, and I am truly grateful for your generosity Paul. I'm changing your name from Senor Pablo to Don Pablo. Thank you so very much. The contents were:
AF Anejo Reserva No. 50 (5.25x50)
Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill (4.87x50) ISOM
Opus X xXx Power Ranger (4.625x49)
Vengeance Maduro Ligero Torpedo (6.25x52)
Tatuaje Black Tubo Torpedo (6.125x52)
And for the sweetest little lump of coal a fellow could ask for:
Kinky Friedman The Willie (6x48) While I'm a little leery of putting something called "The Willie' in my mouth, It does appeal to the Texan in me. I'll certainly be having the Anejo for New Years per your instructions and again. Thanks a million Paul...
Now as for all the rest of you, I've seen the generosity displayed by everyone on this site not only in this Secret Santa exchange but in everything else that goes on around here from passes to the troops to bombs, contests, and everything else... So, to everyone on the site I commend your generosity, good spirits, and am thankful for your friendship and camaraderie. May you all be especially blessed this Holiday season and throughout the coming year.
Edited for spelling.

I believe there may be some clarification in order. When I said that it "appealed to the Texan in me", I Did Not mean the concept of putting a "willie' in my mouth, but rather that this was a Kinky Friedman cigar named after Willie Nelson.
Happy Holidays Wesley!

Those look great! And though I'm sure that the Fire was meant as the lump of coal, IMHO those are pretty tasty and you can't find them anymore.

Well I had one hell of a surprise waiting for me when I went home for lunch today. Behold the splendor of my Secret Santa gift courtesy of Rich (ratboy)! The one on the far left is a brand new release from Diamond Crown called the Julius Ceasar, which is the new years smoke and the Arganese is the lump of coal. Thank you Rich, your gift was extremely generous! Merry Christmas to you as well!!! :smoker:

Very nice! Lucky for you it was the Good Rich who drew your name and not the other one....
Very nice indeed, Rich. I want to try that Julius Caesar!
Wow! That's a nice selection of cigars. And while the Arganese CL3 may be the ugly one amidst the others, it's not that terrible.
Damn! Those look tasty!
Another great Seccret Santa line-up!
