I thought the last Round Robin was alot of fun, so I decided to start another.

I sent some invites but know I left out a bunch of people that could be interested.  If you are jump in on the fun!

I appreciate the invite, but I think I'll pass on this one.  I don't think my palate is discerning or educated enough for a blind taste test and I'd hate to drag the rest down.

I did not put any restrictions, so as long as you are willing to adhere to the guidelines, I see no problem.  The only thing I didn't want to see was dog rockets in the mix aside from the 1 blind review on the budget cigar.

Some time ago when I was new to the site, they let me in a pass to get my feet wet

If you don't comply, I'll just have my cousin Vinny visit you

With Don letting me in, no one should worry about scraping the bottom of this one.  Half of you could beat me if you left the bands on and just cut off my access to the internet.  I'm doing this pass because it sounds fun and will probably introduce me to some cigars I haven't tried.  It's like a blind date with an okay girl, a medium girl, and a really pretty girl.  Besides my wife who is going to complain about that.  I'm just hoping to be able to figure out which is the low, medium, and high cigars.  I figure I'll just go with the exact opposite of what I think it is to increase my chances.  It's like my golf game.  People love playing with me.  I'm fun to be around for a few hours and I never beat anyone.

We have 12 so far which is great!  If anyone else is interested let me know before I close it down.  I would like to see everyone have a chance to get their package in order and have them out by the 15th? so everyone gets them at about the same time.  How does that sound?

It's certainly NOT because I think I'm good at guessing what an unmarked cigar is. Last Round Robin, Bob sent me a one dollar cigar that I thought was the expensive one. Funny how when you don't know what you're smoking, the flavor mysteriously changes!  :-(

Proof positive of 2 things:

1. Branding and marketing works.
2. The price tag isn't everything when it comes to cigars, despite what the cigar snobs say...

OK so I did the drawing  ( little piece of paper in the hat ) with only one redraw....I drew my own name the fist time  :lmao:   So here is how it all turned out:

DonM      to   DennisA
Shukpaw    to    zac
Alphairon         to   gitfiddl
Jackal      to    Bob Cordell
BlackIrish   to   Jackal
nwb              to   Beegerply
zac                   to   Alphairon
gitfiddl      to   cmmayo
wlfwalleye   to   nwb
Bob Cordell   to   BlackIrish
DennisA           to   wlfwalleye
whodeeni           to   DonM
87North           to   whodeeni
cmmayo      to   Shukpaw
Beegerply   to   87North

I hope everyone has fun this go round, I enjoyed the last one.  To provide everyone ample time to prepare for this, if everyone could have theirs in the mail by Friday 21 January, that would be great so everyone gets their blind reviews at about the same tiime.  Thanks for participating and have fun!

Neil, I got YOU. Be prepared to get stuff you'll never be able to guess. I should do to you what Anthony (WHERE IS ANTHONY, ANYWAY?) did to me in the first Round Robin--he sent me three sticks that looked identical. Of course, one was my first VSG and another was my first DPG JJ Maduro, so I can't really complain.

and don't be surprised if one of them sticks is from a local cigar company you NEVER EVEN HEARD OF.

OK so I did the drawing  ( little piece of paper in the hat ) with only one redraw....I drew my own name the fist time  :lmao:   So here is how it all turned out:

DonM      to   DennisA
Shukpaw    to    zac
Alphairon         to   gitfiddl
Jackal      to    Bob Cordell
BlackIrish   to   Jackal
nwb              to   Beegerply
zac                   to   Alphairon
gitfiddl      to   cmmayo
wlfwalleye   to   nwb
Bob Cordell   to   BlackIrish
DennisA           to   wlfwalleye
whodeeni           to   DonM
87North           to   whodeeni
cmmayo      to   Shukpaw
Beegerply   to   87North

I hope everyone has fun this go round, I enjoyed the last one.  To provide everyone ample time to prepare for this, if everyone could have theirs in the mail by Friday 21 January, that would be great so everyone gets their blind reviews at about the same tiime.  Thanks for participating and have fun!

Don, what would you suggest we use as our price guide? Should we use the Comparison Shopper? http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/images/stories/comparisonshopper/comparison_shopper-123010.pdf

It's tough when you look at a cigar that can be had on CigarBid for $13 for a 5-pack (with a little luck), but then lists for around $10 on Cigar.com.

I hope.  And yes I get called Byran all the time, first time I purchased a house they put Byran on all the paper work.  I told the lady  that was doing the loan my name was spelled wrong and she got mad because they had to do all paper work over.  :lmao:    They are maked 87South, 87West,87East

USPS tracking number is 0310 0480 0001 6407 5230.

Got all EIGHT cigars you sent, Dave. You must be paying attention because you included a couple of my go-to cigars: the 5 Vegas A and the Padilla 68.

Thanks for the SNEAK ATTACK!!!

...and looking forward to making guesses about Huey, Dewey, and Louie.

You're welcome, Corey!

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like a common cold.  However, if you stomach goes south, then it might be the flu.

Either way, hope you get feeling better Bob.

Wes should be done tomorrow to be shipped out on Wed. waiting for a package forgot about the holiday. :-(

No worries Byron... Just give me a hint as to when to look for them since they go to the old house and I'll have to be sure to go over to pick them up.  (Just don't want them to have to sit in the cold for too long.   :-) )

I was just wondering to myself, if people ever make the mistake of calling you Bryan.  My father-in-law's name is Byron and it happens to him all the time.  People always make the mistake of calling me West...  Usually it is younger people who do that.  It's like they've never heard of real names what with all the weird made up crap these kids get named any more.

Thanks for the heads up Byron... I'll be keeping a look out.  Creative names on the smokes.

As for having to do the paper work again in buying a house, we had to do that 3 times last summer when we bought this one.  We had to get the names right on them once, the address right on them another, and a third time when we had to change the price to account for busted HVAC.  The worst part was that the first set I had to fax back from Phoenix which cost me like 25 bucks only to find when I got back home that they'd all been re-drafted and had to be done all over again.  Real estate people can be so dumb...  :lmao:

I was just up in the Seattle area this last year and it's a beautiful place. The football and baseball stadiums are wonderful. As a matter of fact, I got to see the Labor Day baseball game against Minnesota that turned out to be Griffey's last appearance.

I still can't believe that was my little Ranger team in the World Series last October...

You guys shame me.  I did't know that this little excercise in blind reviewing was gonna end up being the big cigar gift off, and so I just followed the instructions like my wife often wishes I would.  Seems a bit wrong that I did it here but rarely so for her.  Anyway, I just got my package from Byron yesterday evening, and in addition to my sampling sticks (which were indeed labeled 87South, 87East, and 87West)  I also recieved (Please correct me if I'm wrong Byron, as I often am) a Perdomo Patriarch Torpedo, A perdomo La Tradicion Series Reserve Limited Oscuro E, a Hoyo Excalibur 1066, An El Rey Del Mundo Olvidados (not sure of the size but it's freakin' huge.) A Cain maduro Torpedo, and what appears to be a Diesel Unholy Cocktail.  My thanks to you Byron as your generosity is beyond the call.  I'm humbled.   :-)

I don't think anyone's worried about it.  I really hadn't planned on sending any extras to Corey.  I was rummaging through my humis getting the first five sticks together and after I'd put the humis up, I realized I'd left a few cigars on my desk.  So I said "What the Hell" and threw them in with the pass.

The Brick House and Cain F are a couple that I've wanted to try, and the Los Blancos Nine I've never heard of, but from what I've read this afternoon, should be an enjoyable smoke. Thanks again!

I smoked the first of the bunch zac sent me today.  This was No. I of the series.

The stick was a dark medium brown.  The wrapper had a bit of a sheen to it and a few veins here and there, nothing excessive.  Construction appeared to be quite good.  The wrapper was nicely applied with no wrinkles or the like.  The cap was smoothly applied and blended nicely to the wrapper.  The 5 x 52 stick was hefty and seemed to be well filled with no soft or hard spots.  The wrapper seemed a little thin for a maduro though.  The body had little aroma but the foot smelled of dark chocolate with a bit of Eau de Barnyard in the mix.

I elected to punch the cap and this process proceeded smoothly.  Draw was spot on with a sweet tobacco taste and a hint of chocolate.  I toasted the foot and it lit easily.  It began producing a good quantity of billowing white smoke.  No pepper surprise at first which kind of surprised me.  Initial notes of dark chocolate, coffee, a little earth, and a carmel sweetness.  The rich sweetness was quite pleasant and lasted all through the smoke.

The first third saw a development of the sweetness, chocolate, and coffee in a balanced mix of flavor.  The flavors mellowed a bit in the second third and the sweetness tied them together nicely.  Approaching the last third the strength climbed to the full side of medium full with nary a tetch of harshness.  The flavors deepened and richened more towards the end.  I smoked this one as long as I could hold onto it.  Very nice cigar!  Thanks, Chris.

My guess is that this is a CAO Sopranos Series Associate.  I had one a couple of weeks ago that Bob had sent me and this one seemed to have the same profile.  The wrapper also split in about the same place too.

Feel free to laugh at me if I missed it by a mile but I don't care.  It was a great smoke and I would cheerfully smoke another one right now.

OK, No. II from zac went on the block today.  It was a 5.5 x 55 box pressed Connecticut shade wrapped stick.  The construction appears to be pretty good.  No soft or hard spots.  The wrapper is nicely attached and has a tracery of small veins and one medium sized one arcing along the side of the stick.  This vein didn't cause any problems with the burn.  The box press was slightly relaxed and this, along with the moderately yellowed cello tells me this stick has been in the humi for a few months.  I punched the stick with a backup cutter I had laying around since I sent my good Xikar off to Kansas City to repair a ding in the cutting tube.  The stick punched cleanly and the plug was flexible.  The draw had just the right amount of resistance.  Cold draw flavor was of mild tobacco with a slight sweet grassy tang.  The foot toasted readily and lighting was easy.  Smoke production was good and the burn was uneventful except for little waviness you would expect from a box pressed stick.  It never got out of hand though.  The ash was light grey and lightly striated.  It held past an inch at which point I knocked it off by putting it in the ashtray while I went into the post office.  The cigar was still going when I got back to the truck a few minutes later so it held the fire well.  The smoke was mild from the start.  I got hints of slighty sweet toasted malt and the smoke had a good body to it .  What I found interesting was that the bitterness I usually associate with Connecticut shade wrappers was missing.  This was a nice touch and I think it means the stick has been aging for several months.  The flavor also seemed very similar to the core flavor of the the 5 Vegas Gold maduros I've tried several of over the past months.  Those sticks are about 6 months old and the flavor is remarkably similar when the PA broadleaf tang is discounted.  The flavors didn't change much during the course of the smoke although the body climbed into the low medium range in the last third.  I wasn't looking forward to smoking this stick because of the wrapper and the probability of it being a mild cigar but I was pleasantly surprised.  I think it's worth a solid 3.5 on the Geek Scale.

Now for my guess...The size, wrapper color, and familiar taste tell me this stick is probably a 5 Vegas Gold Double Nickel 5.5 x 55 box press.

And a preview for No. III is in order here too...I have a lot of Kristoffs littering my humidor and No. III bears a striking similarity to them with it's signature pigtail and the configuration of the shaggy foot.  I do believe No. III is a Kristoff Ligero Churchill but I'll make my official consideration of that tomorrow if I get a chance to smoke it.

Now for the last in my Round Robin IV series of mystery sticks.  This is No.  III.  It's a 7 x 48, as measured by the Incra Rule I use for precision measurement work in the shop. The wrapper was a warm dark brown with an oily sheen.  It reminded me of old burnished  leather.  There were a few bumps and a tracery of veins.  One vein ran most of the length and was moderately prominent.  Didn't present any burn problems though.  The stick was capped with a nice little three turn pigtail while the foot was shaggy and the wrapper turned under a bit around the edges.  The body of the cigar had a sweet dark tobacco tang with a hint of molasses as did the foot.  The stick also had a very nice heft and seemed heavy for its size.  No hard or soft spots and the shaft yielded slightly to a gentle squeeze.  The pigtail clipped readily and my Xikar MTF made quick work of clipping the tags around the edges of the head.  The draw was free but not objectionably so.  It tightened up just the right amount after lighting.  The shaggy foot more or less burst into flame when I hit it with the torch so the stick lit quickly.  After a few puffs to get the engine started it produced a good amount of smoke.  I was greeted with a moderate amount of pepper in the first couple of puffs.  The pepper quickly moderated and a subtle sweetness emerged along with a rich spicy taste which reminded me a bit of sarsparilla or sassafras.  The spice and sweetness was soon joined by a dark coffee note which became more noticeable in the second third.  The second third saw the sweetness move into the background while the smoke became a bit more mellow and a citrus note joined the party.  A slight salty element flickered in and and as well.  In the last third the strength picked up and the pepper reappeared.  The sweetness deepened and became richer as did a definite tobacco taste.  I didn't have any burn problems in the course of the smoke and the ash was a light gray, holding for about an inch and a half before dropping.  It was a very nice smoke and I would give it a high 4 on the Geek Scale.  Chris, you picked some good cigars for this contest and I enjoyed smoking all three of them.  Thanks!

Now for my guess...I think No. III was a Kristoff Ligero Churchill.

So I guess I'm now ready to commit myself to what the contest calls for...

The high cost cigar is No. I and I believe it to be a CAO Soprano Associate

The medium cost cigar is No. III which I believe to be a Kristoff Ligero Churchill

The low cost cigar is No. II which I believe is a 5 Vegas Gold Double Nickel

So how bad did I do, Chris???

Ken you did pretty damn good.

I:  La Aroma de Cuba New Blend Robusto (4-8)
II:  5 Vegas - Gold Double Nickel (1-4)
III:  Kristoff Sumatra Churchill (8+)

On a side note, good job on picking up the age of the 5 vegas.  This cigar was at the bottom of my humidor.  I had forgotten about it.  I can't remember if I bought it before or after the birth of my first daughter, but I purchased a special from CI that had 10 5 vegas classic box press and 10 of the gold box press right around that time.  This was the last of that sampler.  Instead of a few months of age, it actually had somewhere around 3 years of box time give or take a few months.

Good Job on the guesses!

Not sure about the points.  The Sumatra and Ligero are different cigars.  From what I can tell on the Kristoff website, They have different wrappers and binders.

Here is my first review.  This was the Dave cigar.

Details:
This was the "Dave" Cigar from the Round Robin IV pass.  Shukpaw sent this to me.
Rested 14 days in my humidor.
This Cigar was 4.5 Inches and around a 50-54 Ring (best guess) Parejo

Initial thoughts:
Very dark brown wrapper.  Maybe Oscuro.  I don't think this was a Maduro.
The Wrapper was thin and slightly delicate.  There was a minor split of the wrapper near the foot.
Decent Construction with a couple of hard spots and a few wrapper flaws.
There were a number of veins running the length of the Cigar.
The cigar body gave off a grassy/barnyard aroma.  The Foot smelled of leather.

After cutting the cigar, the draw was slightly loose with notes of spice.

Smoke:
The cigar lit easily using my torch.

The initial draws on the cigar produced a medium pepper on the lips and tongue.  The first part of the cigar continued with pepper and leather.  As the cigar progressed, I picked up some woodiness in addition to the pepper spice.  The cigar continued with a smoothness I wasn't expecting.  From the first inch in, I could tell this is going to be a fuller bodied cigar.  The Initial ash held for 1.5 inches.

Towards the middle of this stick, the Pepper and wood continued, but I picked up some earthy taste.

The last part of the cigar, I tasted all spice and Leather.  There was a little bitterness coming in as I approached the end of the smoke.

The burn was slightly uneven, but nothing that required a touch up.  The Stick provided a good volume of smoke throughout. The cigar finished with some power.

Conclusion:
This cigar was a full bodied smoke the entire way.  The Nicotine was prominent in this stick.  It hit me pretty good.  When I selected this stick tonight, I didn't think I was going to enjoy it that much due to the initial scent, but I was surprised.  I did enjoy this stick.  I am wondering if the smoothness I experienced and the minor flaws in the wrapper meant the cigar has seen some box time. (Or it could have just been beaten up in shipping)

I also think that the stick was in the 1-4 dollar range, but I will have a better guess at this after I smoke the other 2 sticks.

I think that this cigar was Nicaraguan or Honduran.  At times I thought I was smoking something similar to Jdn Antano.  Other times, I thought I picked up tastes similar to Honduran Bolivars and Hoyo de Monterrey sticks.

Hopefully I don't make an ass of myself on the guess.

Initial shot in the Dark:

Punch Rothschild Oscuro

Great reviews so far!  Looks like Ken already finished his 3 and is currently in the lead.  After further review:

You were dead on with the 5 Vegas Gold, 6 points,

The Kristoff, correct manufacturer but wrong vitola there is a difference between the ligero's and the sumatra, wrong category, 3 points

The La Aroma De Cuba, 0 points but great review

Total: 9 points!

Yup, they are totally different sticks except for the brand and the size.  It's hard to miss identifying a Kristoff because of that pigtail.  They might as well have "Kristoff" printed on the side in neon letters.  I've wanted to try the sumatra and now I have.  It's a good smoke.

Details:
This was the "Bob" Cigar from the Round Robin IV pass.  Shukpaw sent this to me.
Rested 15 days in my humidor.
This Cigar was 4.25 Inches and around a 50+ Ring Parejo

Initial thoughts:
Milk Chocolate brown wrapper.
Good Construction with a very smooth cap.
There was one prominent vein running the length of the Cigar.
The cigar body gave off a heavy cedar aroma.  The Foot smelled of Raisins.

After cutting the cigar, the draw was easy with Heavy Pepper.

Smoke:
The cigar lit easily using my torch.

The initial draws on the cigar produced a blast of Heavy Pepper and cedar.  After the first quarter inch, the Pepper died down, I was left with a smooth cedar and sweet tasting tobacco flavor.  These flavors carried through the rest of the smoke.  This cigar really mellowed out after the that initial blast.

The cedar/Woody flavor and the unidentified sweet were really consistent with this cigar.  The stick turned out to be a very pleasant, medium at its strongest, cigar.

The burn was pretty even, but near the nub, one side started to burn quicker than the other.  The Stick provided a good volume of smoke throughout.

This cigar seemed to burn fairly quickly as it was done in around 45 minutes.

Conclusion:
I enjoyed this stick, and wouldn't mind another.  I am having a very hard time identifying it.  In fact, I don't think I have a guess at all.  Right now I am leaning towards a DPG blended stick.  Even though I haven't smoked many by DPG, the few I have smoked started off with the pepper blast.  This also seems to hold accurate with what I read on CG about Pepin blends.

Initial shot in the Dark:

Unknown.  I will continue to think about this, but probably not come up with anything.

I smoked my last cigar from Neil today.  Here is the review:

Details:
This was the "Rich" Cigar from the Round Robin IV pass.  Shukpaw sent this to me.
Rested 16 days in my humidor.
This Cigar was a 4.75 Perfecto around a 55+ near the top and 45+ near the bottom of the body.

Initial thoughts:
Medium brown wrapper.
Good Construction with a very smooth cap and great shape

The cigar body gave off a pleasing sweet light leathery aroma.

After cutting the cigar, the draw had a nice tug but not restricted. The Cold flavors were of mild wood.

Smoke:
The cigar lit easily using one match.

The cigar opened up with a slight spice and woody tones.  Once the burn moved past the foot nub and into the body of this cigar, The smoke was very smooth.  I tasted wood and a light sweetness throughout the smoke of this cigar.  This was a very tasty and nice cigar.

The burn was extremely even and the first ash held for over 1.5 inches.

This smoke was medium bodied.

Conclusion:
I really enjoyed this stick.  This cigar seemed very familiar to me.  The Shape and taste very much reminded me of sticks with within the Arturo Fuente Hemingway family.  I have smoked a few of the family members in the past.

My guess for this stick:

Arturo Fuente Hemingway Best Seller

My official guesses will come shortly.  Still trying to decide order.

I also realized that I don't think I pick up flavors very well.  I think that my flavor ID's of cigars I have smoked in the past may have come from reviews that I read prior to smoking a Vitola.  Anyway enough blathering.

Middle: (Bob) (I had no clue.  This is a crazy guess based solely off size.)

High: (Rich)

Ok, so I had Jason's number one cigar tonight at the little neighborhood bar.

Medium brown wrapper with a double wrapped cap, a toro size cigar. The smell and prelight draw were sorta tangy with some earth flavors. The initial flavors were somewhat nutty with a slight bitter edge. The first third remained the same with a slight sweetness and some toasty coffee flavors. The ash was nice and had a very light color and held well.

The middle has a nice draw and the ash is still firm. The sweetness has increased and I had some nice coco flavors entering the mix along with the semibitter nuttiness. I think the strength is medium at best and has mellowed some. I'm thinking this may be a Cameroon wrapper, the sweet nutty flavors resemble Cammies I've had in the past.

The last third was about the same and I snuffed it with a couple of inches to go. All in all it was a pretty good smoke, I'm going to guess a La Aurora Cameroon Wrapper...

?????????????????????

I'll hold the low, medium, high priced thingy till later!

I've had A & C.  One I am pretty sure of (it tastes like it came from a certain island), and I believe that you just smoked one from the same box a few days ago.  The other tastes Nicaraguan and I think is an AJ Fenandez or a Nestor Plesencia blend.

Corey, yours are on the way as well.  They should hit your PO Box on Tuesday.

My first review is for Louie:

Seems to be 5 x 50, but could have a little less gauge. Maybe as little as 48.
Has a slight box-press to it, rectangular-style, and a medium brown wrapper that is mostly veinless but with raised seams.
The cigar clips easily and cleanly and has a faint berry flavor on cold draw.
The first few puffs are familiar, though I can't place it immediately. It has pepper on the finish and a fruity sense about it. There is also apparent cedar. Maybe a Padron.
There is a certain amount of Cuban quality to the flavor, but I don't think this is a Cuban, even though the ash is close to the right color. Earth, leather, and more pepper emerge as I continue through the first third, and the strength is pretty apparent.
Halfway in, strong butterscotch emerges, making this cigar nearly impossible to guess at. I thought it might be a G.A.R. by George Rico Robusto, but this cigar is something different. It reminds me a bit of the last Tat I had.

I have no idea what this cigar is, but I liked it. I'd give it a high 4 or low 4.5.
I'll submit my final guess after I've reviewed them all.

Next is Huey:

A medium dark torpedo measuring 6 x 52, by my best guess, has good construction and a light feel--so I'm guessing an open draw and a quick burn. The draw is fairly open and initially flavors, again, are familiar. I just said, "Dammit" on the fourth puff because I know I have smoked this blend before... but I have no idea what this could be.
Early thoughts are there's a prominent berry flavor and an earthy woodiness at the base. At best, strength-wise, this might end up a medium-full, but I won't know for awhile. The earliest guess I have is a Gran Habano 3 Siglos, though the measurements don't hold up.
It's pretty boring through the first third, with a bit of wood and nuts. Also, the performance is showing signs of average construction as it has a crooked burn and "hollow" spots within the filler.
This is a familiar cigar and I'm starting to think this is going to be the cheap one. It has very little strength and is very average in flavor. Makes me think it's a Gurkha that probably would have had a fancy band and nothing much behind it. I hate to generalize, but flavor is one-dimensional and the construction sucks, so my guess is a...

OK, I just finished Dewey:

Dewey:

Looks to be a maduro robusto around 5 x 50 (possibly 52). It clips to a restrictive draw and has a cold draw flavor and aroma of peppery tobacco. The wrapper, which is mottled and soft, has slight veininess and shows the seams a bit.
The initial flavor is oak and pepper. There's a touch of leather in there, too. The restrictive draw is not allowing me to get a ton of smoke, and the burn is extremely wavy.
Farther along, a touch of berries and some cinnamon emerges, and I am at a loss as to what cigar this might be. I'm a third in and all I know is it is getting better as I go, especially the spice in the exhale.
The strength continues to build as I go and a Pepin-like sweet pepper is long in the finish.

FINAL GUESSES:
Huey: Gurkha's Castle Hall Torpedo (low)
Dewey: San Cristobal Clasico (high)
Louie: G.A.R. by George Rico Robusto (medium)

...and I'm not confident on any of that.

Smoking Cordell #2.  A long tapered torpedo.  Peppery at the start but mellowing out and growing richer as it progresses.  I'm only partly through, so a fuller review will follow, but I'm liking it.  Don't have any good guesses yet.

Huey was the high dollar of the three, a 5 Vegas Limitada 2009 Belicoso;
Dewey was the medium, a Chateau Real By Drew Estate Noble Habana Maduro;
and Louie was the low end, an Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto.

The 5 Vegas had about a year and a half on it, the IT about 9 months, and the Chateau Real I picked up about two months ago when Pete posted that deal from Holt's.  I admit, I haven't smoked the 5 Vegas myself yet, but I'm a big fan of the other two.  The 5 Vegas was a ringer of sorts, I guess, considering the prices they can sometimes be had at, but I went by the price aggregator at the now defunct Cigarcyclopedia and they had singles listed at $15 so I said what the heck.  Sorry if I threw a wrench into the works.

I smoked "Cigar C" out of the three Ken sent me uniquely labelled A, B, and C.  I honestly have know clue.  I pulled it out this morning and looked at it and promptly asked myself "Self, what have we gotten ourself into?"

Here's my review:

Cigar "C":  Robusto (5x50), a few prominent veins in the wrapper with a nice oily sheen.  The ash dropped first at 3/4".
Kind of wheaty at first, then nutty, with a little pepper and coffee.  Good smoke volume. The cigar felt firm.  Just past midway through, the burn went awry, hanging up on one of the aforementioned veins.  With just under two inches to go, things began to get really bitter and I had to quit.  I'd have to give this one a 3, maybe a 3.5, as it was very enjoyable until the bitterness took it south.

I'm afraid to even venture a guess as to brand, blender, etc.  My palate and knowledge is just not that refined.  I would guess that it might be Honduran in origin, as it was a bit bolder than most Dominicans and shy of what I'd expect from Nicaragua.  Just by looking at the other two cigars, I'd say that this was the less expensive of the three, but I'd like to smoke the other two first, so don't hold me to that.

I really liked the IT and really hated the 5 Vegas Limitada. The last Limitada 2009 I had also disappointed me, and when I started smoking, the Super Fuerte was a stick I'd often bid on (I stopped because I started getting loosely-rolled cigars). I had the same reaction to the one Chateau Real Maduro I smoked: decent, but needs more power and flavor.

ZERO POINTS!!!!!

Cigar #1:
Prelight - This robusto is slighter longer than 5" and about a 52 ring guage.  The colorado wrapper is sligthly veiny but otherwise devoid of any blemishes or bumps.  The cap is also very cleanly applied.  To say it is firmly packed would be an understatement - it felt like a brick.  The prelight aroma was classic barnyard, and the cold draw had a floral note to it.

1/2 - It opened with a nice medium body with notes of cedar and a dry finish.  From there, notes of leather and a slight honeyed flavor began to dominate.  The construction was very good with a razor straight burn line and firm ash that held for an inch at a time.  The only drawback was the draw, which was a little more firm than I like.

2/2 - The woodiness from the first half began to dominate in the second half, although there were notes of cream from time to time.  There were a few more subtle flavors that I couldn't place, but it added a nice complexity to the smoke.  Again, construction was very good and required no touch-ups or relights.

Overall, this was a good cigar, better than #3.  It was slightly complex, medium-bodied, and well-constructed.  This would get four stars on the CG scale.

Cigar #2:
Prelight - Another robusto, measuring slightly over 5" and about 52 ring guage.  The colorado wrapper is the best of the three - very small veins, silky smooth texture, and no discoloration.  It is also nicely constructed with a seamless roll.  I did note that the cap was a little sloppy.  The prelight aroma smelled of well aged tobacco, and the cold draw had notes of leather.

1/2 - This cigar opened with a creamy richness with both leather and wood on the finish.  After a few puffs, there was a slight tickle of pepper hitting my palate.  I also noticed some a more subtle nutty flavor as I smoked.  Construction was good - an easy draw made for billowing amounts of smoke.  The ash was firm, and the burn line was more or less straight.

2/2 - The more I smoked, the more I liked this cigar.  There was a nice complexity to it, and the medium-body was extremely smooth.  Notes of nuts, leather, and mild spices all intermingled, and toward the nub, I noticed the addition of coffee.  Construction remained like the first half, and I had no issues.

Overall, this was a good cigar, one I might buy if the price is right.  I enjoyed it the most of the three cigars Kyle sent.  It was more complex and better tasting than the other two, and I kept getting the feeling I smoked it before.  This was borderline 4.5 stars.

Cigar #3:
Prelight - This is a robusto, slightly shorter than 5" long and about a 50 ring guage.  The wrapper is medium-brown, slightly mottled, and somewhat veiny.  Construction is mixed: the bunch is firm, but the body of the cigar is bumpy in multiple places.  Beyond that, the roll is seamless and cap cleanly applied.  The prelight aroma smells of well-aged tobacco, and the cold draw is slightly peppery.

1/2 - It opens with a nice woodiness reminescent of cedar.  However, it really goes full-throttle after a few draws and becomes harsh.  Once it mellowed, the cedar came the prominent flavor with an occassional note of nuts and leather.  Construction was very average: the burn line was a little wavy and the ash was extremely flaky.  It wouldn't hold for more than a half inch.  The draw, however, was perfect, allowing plenty of smoke with each puff.

2/2 - There was little complexity to the smoke.  The woodsy flavor continued to dominate - it was a nice flavor, but I just didn't pick up on any subtleties  Construction was much the same as the first half.

Overall, this was a decent cigar, one I would smoke again but not necessarily buy.  The flavor was good, but the entire experience was boring.  It would get a high 3, closer to 3.5 stars on the CG scale.

As for guesses, Kyle really threw me a curveball with these.  Not only did cigars #1 and #2 look almost exactly alike, but I'm reasonably sure I've never smoked #3.  Anyway, here are my guesses, and I don't think I'm anywhere close:

Cigar #1:  La Aurora - Medium
Cigar #2:  EP Carrillo 2009 - High
Cigar #3:  Don Pepin ? - Low

#2 Davidoff Millennium Blend Robusto   High

#3 Avo Heritage Robusto    Medium

Not even close on any of them.  Looks like I got one point...

That Davidoff was pretty good, but I'm not sure if it was good enough for the price. Also, I had a feeling one of them might have been an AVO, but I thought of that after the fact.  I've never been a fan of AVO, and it showed in this review.

Thanks for the exceptional cigars, Kyle!

FINAL GUESSES:
Huey: Gurkha's Castle Hall Torpedo (low)
Dewey: San Cristobal Clasico (high)
Louie: G.A.R. by George Rico Robusto (medium)

...and I'm not confident on any of that.

Huey was the high dollar of the three, a 5 Vegas Limitada 2009 Belicoso;
Dewey was the medium, a Chateau Real By Drew Estate Noble Habana Maduro;
and Louie was the low end, an Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto.

ZERO POINTS!!!!!

OK, I have been putting this off long enough.  Eddie has given me nigh impossible to identify sticks, so my guesses will probably be way off.

Stick A - This cigar had a medium to dark brown wrapper; it looked like a dark Ecuadorian leaf.  It was oily and a bit toothy.  The foot had a big dark spot of discoloration.  Prelight smelled of Nicaraguan or Honduran tobacco.

The initial flavor was rich and chewy with a lot of leather.  There was some sweetness, but a very heavy finish.  Some chili pepper notes were in the taste.

The burn was near perfect.  Ash was white and not flaky, but wanted to drop off at the slightest provocation.

Unfortunately, there was little to no dynamics to the flavor profile.  That same heavy oak and leather flavor was about all that I got from it.

My guess is something form Nestor Plasencia.  I will guess Cu-Avana: Intenso Toro

Price Low

Cigar B - This was a slightly box pressed Cuban looking stick.  It wad a bumpy wrapper with a green water stain and a cap that looked like they came from some Island South of Miami.  The prelight aroma also was that of an ISOM stick

The initial draw was very tight and the cigar had quite a few soft spots in it.

When I lit it up, part of the foot sheared away as if it was hollow.

The flavor opened with a heavy leather taste with a bit of saltiness.  It reminded me of a Honduran LGC.

About an inch in the draw stated to open and the flavors picked up a bit.  Some brown spices came into play as did some cedar and oak.  The flavors, however, were somewhat muted and the smoke was a bit astringent to my throat.  One side of the cigar was trailing and I noticed big voids of tobacco as I went though to the second half of the cigar.

Once I got past the bad burning and uneven packed area this cigar all of a sudden came alive.  More intense cedar and floral notes emerged, along with a creamy finish, reminding of a Monte.  I only wish that they hadn't waited so long to get into play.

I did nub this cigar as it got pretty good once I was past the bad spots.

I am wondering if this stick saw beetle activity and then got frozen.  I saw no holes in the wrapper, but the big tobacco voids make me think that something was amiss.

I am going to take a wild stab at this one (mainly from the size and shape) and say that this was a Vegas Robaina Classico that was having a very bad day.

Price - High

Cigar C - Here was the pick of the bunch, a 5.5 inch 42 Ring gauge, golden brown beauty with a nice Cuban scent.  The prelight draw was rich and wheaty with a touch of cinnamon.

The wrapper was slightly oily and very toothy.  The color was the perfect example of Colorado Claro.

When I lit it up, I was hit with a slightly leathery and oaky flavor with a touch of nuttiness.

A few minutes in and the flavor became more and more cedar.

Once the flavors completely opened up I was hit by a heavily floral undertone.  I was pretty convinced by this point that Eddie had given me a Cuban.

The cigar built to bolder and bolder cedar and left a nice tingle on my tongue and a buzz in my head.

I am guessing that I got a Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo Du Roi.

If this is not an ISOM I will head right out to the store and and get some more.

Price - Middle.

Never heard the term "brown spices" used in descrbing cigar flavors.  I assume you mean similar to cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and the like?

Yep, the softer spices like you described as opposed to peppers.  I know that Rebecca uses the term Cabinet Spices when she describes those.

Round Robin Blind Review # 1

Finely had a day were I could do a review on the cigars that Nathan sent.  Outside temp was 38* so it was a heat wave, I started out with #2 of 3.  It was a dark brown in color, with the sun out, which was minimal it had a reddish hue to it, not sure if you could call it a maduro.  It was a robusto size about 5 x 52?, firm along the body no soft spots, with some veins running down the length of the cigar.  It had no smell to it except at the foot which had a dry straw/grass smell to it.  The cap cut clean, pre draw was loose, and had the taste of dry grass, with a slight sweetness.   I toasted the foot, and got a nice amount of smoke, was surprised that I didn't get more as the pre draw was loose.

The 1/3 had a nice aroma from the smoke, and had a hint of spice along with a woody taste this continued thru the 1/3 of the smoke just towards the end I tasted a very slight hint of some coco.  The 2/3 was uneventful, it had somewhat of a bitter taste, that I couldn't tell if it was of chocolate, or coffee.  The last third was pretty much the same and it just never really developed into anything, I did smoke it down to the nub hoping to get something out of it.

The ash on this was scaly, but not flaky, and the burn was good with no touch ups.  I smoked this cigar in just under an hour, I'm usually a slow smoker, and it never got hot.

Overall it wasn't for me, it could be better with a lot of rest, not sure if that would help.  At this point I would say this is the low price of the 3, but will wait to smoke the others, as for what vitola it is NOT A CLUE, will have to think about it.

I was helped along immensely by Chris's choice of mystery sticks.  The Double Nickel doesn't have many counterparts.  The pigtail and shaggy foot practically shouted Kristoff so figuring out the maker was a no-brainer on my part even though I missed ID on the exact stick.  The La Aroma de Cuba threw me completely.  In absence of any distinctive visual cues I have a tough time identifying a huge number of sticks.

Not too badly at all!

Cigar A:  Spanish Galleon Corojo (low price)

Cigar B:  Vegas Robaina Clasico OCT 08 (high price)
[So sorry that this wasn't an optimal smoke.  I've smoked a couple from this box and didn't have any construction problems, although they are still a bit young.  Perhaps just a bad rolling job?]

Cigar C:  Montecristo (DR) No. 3 (middle price)

Total: 6 points

Blind Review stick A

This cigar has a light brown mottled wrapper w/ some veins showing and minor tooth.
The wrapper smells like fresh hay and the foot smells like hay although not as fresh.
I cut the torpedo tip at an angle with my trusty "Buck Knife" and tasted stale hay & faint
pepper on the cold draw.

After i toasted the foot i heard a cracking sound and a hairline tear nearly the entire length
of the cigar revealed itself and the wrapper has started to both lift & buckle as the heat gets
near it. The smoke is plentiful, the body is mild, flavors of clean tobacco and marshmallow
are present. I also detect a little toast along with light black pepper and black tea.

In the 2nd 3rd i picked up roasted peanut shells, rich tobacco, and muted pepper. I re-lit the
cigar because I put it down and i taste a unique sweetness (maybe sweet cedar?) and roasted
peanuts. The strength has grown to right between med & med-full. The draw is a little tight
but it makes for the good and even combustion of the tobacco. Even though the burn line is
skewed because of the cracking it is almost even. Momentarily, the body jumps up to med-full.

Entering the final 3rd the finish is very long. Flavors of sweet cedar and spice are prevalent.
The strength is now full bodied and I'm getting both leather and sweet cedar. I must say I've
enjoyed the nuances of this stick very much!

My guess is that this stick is Med. Priced, a Man 'O War Torpedo!

p.s. I know i can't go back but after thinking about it i really think it's a cu-vana intenso! ;-)

Okay, here goes nothing.  I said at the start of this my palate isn't sophisticated enough to tell much about a cigar and tried to beg out of this but you jerks twisted my arm! My three cigars were sent courtesy of our master woodworker Ken aka Alphairon.

My reviews of the sticks:

Cigar A:  5x50 with a somewhat dry maduro wrapper.  Took the punch well.  There was some gloss around the foot as if a repair had been made to the wrapper.  Medium bodied, with strong black coffee notes at the start.  After the first inch, the coffee mellowed into a mix of leather and toast flavor which held for most of the cigar.  Towards the nub things got a little peppery.  The burn was even, with a grey ash that dropped every 3/4" or so.  The draw was good.  Pretty good cigar.  I'd give it a firm 3.5.

Cigar B:  6.75 x 48-9ish ring.  Cut well, nice draw.  Mild nutty flavor at the start that morphed into some coffee and leather flavors.  Closer to the end, things spiced up a bit with a touch of pepper and cedar.  The burn was even, with the almost white ash holding for close to two inches.  This was probably my favorite of the three.  I'd rate it between a 3.5 and a 4.

Cigar C:  Robusto (5x50), a few prominent veins in the wrapper, Nice oily sheen.  Ash dropped at 3/4".  Kind of wheaty at first, then nutty, a little pepper and coffee. Good smoke volume, the cigar felt firm.  Just past midway through, the burn went awry, hanging up on one of the aforementioned veins.  With just under two inches to go, things began to get really bitter and I had to quit.

The only thing I can guess is the cost part.  From lowest cost to highest, I'd have to guess C, A, and B.  Other than that, I'm clueless, and I'm probably way off on that, too.

I'm very curious as to what I smoked, as I would gladly smoke any of the three again.  Thanks, Don, for starting this, and thanks to Ken as well.  I figure Ken and I have enough of a rapport to where he might have put some thought into this and thrown me some I'd have never have thought about buying without trying first.

"he might have put some thought into this"

And that might be wrong too!

OK, Dave, it was a good try.  Here's the lineup...

A - Gran Habano corojo Vintage 2002  (low)
B - Illusione cg:4  (high)
C - G.A.R. robusto  (middle)

So the low-middle-high order is B-C-A.  Your choice of C-A-B does not achieve congruency so, alas, you accrue no points in that part of the equation.  Wild-assed guesses are par for the course in the Geek world so you shoulda stuck your neck out and tried your luck with the names of the sticks.  But, since we treat everyone with dignity and due regard for their self esteem, we respect your choice of not choosing.

So, according to the rules of this exercise your final score is 0.

Actually the order, low to high, is A-C-B, smarty pants!  I'd smoked the G.A.R. and the Gran Habano before, but had no recollection when I smoked the two you sent.  Funny thing is, of the three, the most familiar tasting was the Illusione, and I've never smoked one of them prior to last night.  I guess I should have hung a couple of cigar catalogs on the wall and thrown darts and made some wildassed guesses, but I already get ridiculed enough around here and, quite frankly, I didn't want to have to call my shrink again this week...  :shamebag:

Yeah, you're right about the order.  What happened was I was looking in the mirror while typing and naturally the words looked right to me but would appear to be reversed to everyone else.  Or maybe dyslexic I am.  ?Knows who  You picked the quality stick though.

As far as the video...well, that's a bit harsh for this occasion but I can cheerfully apply it to some, nay most, of the rambling that comes out of the City of Elected Idiots on the Potomac.

So Here we go with mine...

87 EAST-  This was a toro sized smoke that was wrapped in a nice dark maduro wrapper that had some moderate veins that was a little bit dry and rough to the touch.  This was pretty well built with a nice roll.  It was firm and the cello was yellowed to suggest that it was well aged.  It had a nice prelight smell of barnyard and cedar but I didn't detect much flavor in the cold draw.

It clipped nicely and lit without any touble and gave up lots of smoke with a slightly open draw.  The  gray and black ash held to an inch or so and was slightly flaky.  It had a nice mellow richness and flavors comprised of earth, black pepper, wood, and a sweetness that reminded me a bit of honey.  It stayed in that mode throughout the first two thirds before changing a bit in the final third to include coffee, cedar, and cocoa.  Overall I enjoyed this quite a bit.

87 South- This was a simple little perfecto that measured to around a 5x48-50.  It was a little light in the hand and gave up a mild tobacco aroma when cold with little flavor prelight.

The construction was pretty good and it had a nice Connecticut wrapper. It clipped very cleanly with an open draw and plenty of smoke.  The burn was absolutely perfect and held the line spectacularly.  It lit very easily and started out with a bit of a had edge with lots of pepper in the mix.  It settled in to a basic Connecticut flavor with a light nuttiness and some bitterness on the finish that reminded me of an EO #21.  The addition of toast flavors came in on the final third, but I was surprised that I didn't really find much in the way of cedar which is often present in Connecticut cigars, which led me to think this might have had something in the filler more than just Dominican tobaccos.  Over all, not bad but I wasn't really bowled over by this one.

87 West-  This was a robusto size that came in at around 5x50-52 that was very firm with a lightly veined maduro wrapper.  The cap was applied absolutely perfectly and it cut nicely with a solid perfect medium draw.  I detected no real prelight smell but it had a bit of a nut/aged tobacco flavor on the cold draw.

It lit up easily and took off with a typical Nicaraguan kick but the burn line tended to run sideways.  The first third found a bit of a gap in the filler that tried to tunnel back but didn't throw the cigar out of whack and it recovered by the first part of the second third.  This too had a flavor profile that stayed fairly static throughout the first two thirds before changing just a bit in the final third, however the second third was a little more strongly flavored than the first.  The flavors were espresso, earth, and touches of caramel and hints of leather.  The final third saw it change a bit to a more creamy, nutty tobacco flavor with pepper on the finish.  This was, for me, the most enjoyable of the three and I nubbed it out on the front porch in the sunshine.

I've not the foggiest idea what I smoked but I thought they were all tasty and I really apprecieated the opportunity to participate in this little excercise.  Thanks to Don for putting this together and thanks to Byron for the selection of smokes to try.  My guesses are as follows from lowest to highest in cost:

87South-  My guess which I'm sure is far from right is CAO Gold Bantam Perfecto
87West- Perdomo Grand Cru
87East- Ashton Maduro #40

So...  How'd I do?

Ok, so I finished the third one this morning, here goes:

Cigar A
This cigar is well made with a medium brown wrapper, nicely done cap.  The wrapper had very small veins visible.  The predraw revealed an easy only slightly restricted draw.  In the 1/3, it came on with a medium full flavor with some pepper in the beginning.  The flavors developed into some earth and a hint of cedar which leads me to believe this is a blended cigar with DOM/NIC/HON tobaccos maybe.  In the 2/3 the flavors developed some becoming more rich and in the 3/3 we slightly stronger.  The draw was perfect all of the way through with lots of smoke, the burn was perfect as well.  Overall, a respectable cigar but by the flavor, I couldn't help but think this was an average mid priced cigar

Cigar B
This is a pretty rugged cigar in appearance, med brown wrapper, displaying some lumpy bumpy veins.  In cutting it revealed a few good sized veins in the binder.  The pre draw was slightly restricted as was the draw throughout smoking.
In lighting, I got some peppery spice flavors and slightly harsh at first, mellowing some as I got into the last 1/3.  I picked up on some cedar in the 2/3 with a woody grassy flavor. The burn was not perfect, but did not require any touch ups.  The ash was light gray and slightly flaky.  More medium in strength in the 2/3, and built in flavor in the 3/3.  While the flavors were not bad, I couldn't help but come to the conclusion that this was not a premium cigar and more the lower end of the price range.  I am guessing that it had some DOM in it with the cedar flavors

Cigar C

This cigar had the best presentation of the 3 for the blind reviews with a maduro wrapper and only minimal veins, very well constructed and smooth.  After getting a clean straight cut, and toasting the foot I got a great draw from this cigar with a ton of smoke.  From the start I got some leathery maduro flavors medium full in strength right from the very beginning.  From there I picked up on some espresso and a hint of mocha.  While the flavors did not transition much, they were rich all of the way through.  In the end the flavors got even bolder to near full bodied.  The burn was razor straight all of the way through,  I would definitely smoke this one again.

After considering all 3 cigars, I am pretty confident that I have not smoked any of them and have no clue at all what they were.  So I am going to at least give a run at the rankings:

Cigar A- Middle

Cigar B- Low

Cigar C -High

Now Excel can embarrass me and let me know how I did

Cigar #2 in the Round Robin Pass

This cigar was about 6x50, dark brown, somewhat rough looking, there was a small patch of the wrapper missing, were the band was.  The feel was firm along the body, no soft spots, every so slight of some foot damage, It looked as though it had been resting for some time.  It faint smell of barnyard, and the foot smelled of sweet grass.  After cutting pre draw had a slight drag to it with a sweet hay taste.

1/3 the opening was very good with a sweet coffee like taste with a hint of creaminess to it, along with cedar.  The cedar continued through the 2/3 along with leather, just before going into the last 3rd the sweet coffee came back giving it a nice pop.  The last 3/3 the coffee got a little strong, with the leather continuing to stay, it ended with a small amount of pepper at the nub.

This cigar smoked like it had some rest on it, and I enjoyed the transitioning of the flavors.  To me this was a very good smoke which I enjoyed immensely.  Thanks Nathan for a nice smoke hopefully I did it justice

Cigar #3 in the Round Robin Pass

This cigar was 5x50 and had a antique look to it, as the wrapper was splotchy, veiny.  It had a hay/ grass smell to it, and was firm along the body.  The cap cut cleanly, had a nice draw, with the taste of some chocolate.
1/3 opening was good with a nice woody taste, along with some spice; I noticed this cigar had a nice rich cigar aroma from the smoke (if that makes any sense).   The woody taste turned into cedar going into the 2/3 along with a slight spice on the retro hale.  The last3/3 was pretty much uneventful I did pick up a small amount of leather.  Towards the end the cigar became a little restricted, but I did smoke it to the nub.
Overall not much to this one, maybe some rest time would help.  Thanks again Nathan for the smokes enjoyed all three.  Also thanks to Don for setting this up had a great time.

I would say that:

#2 was the low review#1

#1 was the middle review #3

#3 was the high review #2

I really have no clue as to what I smoked, and I do not want to insult Nathan by guessing, but I did enjoy the smokes.

Ok, cigar numero dos! Great looking darkish brown wrapper with a nice triple cap...

Hmmmmmm, triple cap!

Very smooth coffee, earth and peppery flavors in the first third of this cigar. The burn and draw are almost perfect with a very pretty light gray and somewhat silvery ash that held for over a inch easily. The second half seemed to be dominated by some coco and heavy black coffee flavors, the draw and burn are still perfect!

The finish was very smooth, no bitters or harsh flavors at all. The peppery flavors came and went with the coffee and coco notes. An excellent cigar...

My guess: Don Pepin Garcia Blue Label Torpedo, the Imperiales, of course blended by DPG!

Blind Test B:

Very Hard Stick, Ugly Splotchy Mottled Wrapper. This stick appears to be a 6x52 toro. The draw is tighter than a shirt I traid to wear at age 11! The finish is long, lingering and oily. I get a sweet coffee aftertaste. Strength is medium at best right now, I also taste hay and black tea.

A half inch in pepper, earth, spice, and black tea pick up and the cigar still has a creamy/oily finish. The ash is firm and its graish, brownish, and black. The draw on this stick is terrible! Entering the second inch the smoke is plentiful and i taste leather and black coffee w/ a hint of spice on the creamy finish. There are also some pepper notes that i get on the retrohale but its not overwhelming.

Because I'm having to draw so hard the cigar is starting to get hot. I clip of a little more but it does little to improve the draw. For the first time I notice cedar,  love the creamy/oily finish that this cigar gives off. It should be noted that the ash is very firm and has held for over 1.5 inches and is still growing. The flavors are cedar and black coffee. The rough looking single cap led me to belive that this cigar is honduran/dominican i taste peanuts on the finish.

The final third brings on more strength and the first occurrence of red pepper and cedar. The stick is hot tot the touch and the wrapper is starting to unravel. leather is lingering on the oily finish.  The flavor is burnt espresso and very unpleasant so at this point i sat it down!

My guess is this is a dominican made Cuban REject/Cuban Counterfeit!

Sorry this took so long.  We have had the coldest spring in the areas history and I am still not get out to smoke much.  I need an indoor place to smoke.  I digress.

Ken does not need to worry about me taking over the lead.

Thanks again to Corey for sending me these.

Ranger:  I'm guessing this was the low end cigar.  I'm going to guess something from Oliva.  This was a light colored torpedo or Belicoso.  Not much aroma coming off of it.  Very veiny.  Firm.  It lit and burned well.  It had a slight sweet taste to it.  The taste was consistent throughout the entire cigar.  This seemed like a well done low end cigar.  I would probably not go out of my way to get more of these, but I would smoke them if I had them.

Maverick:  I'm guessing this was the mid priced cigar.  I'll take a stab and say something from Alec Bradley.  This was a mild one.  While okay, it was my least favorite of the three cigars.  The flavor was not that interesting and had no complexity.  The burn was okay and for the first half of this cigar the construction was okay.  At about the half way point this cigar started to fall apart.  By the time I got the last third the wrapper had fallen off and the binder was increasingly letting go.  With a couple inches left I had to let this one go, because it was no longer together enough to be able to continue smoking it.  I found this cigar to be a bit of a disappointment.

Cowboy.  I'm guessing this was the high end cigar.  I'll guess Partagas, maybe ISMO.  This cigar had a dark brown with patches of black wrapper.  It was rugged to the touch.  It gave of a wonderful aroma.  I had a hard time getting this one to light, but once lit it only needed the occasional touchup.  It started out great.  By the second third it needed to be regularly purged to keep the taste up.  By the third third it was becoming increasingly bitter, mixed in with its good flavors.  With an inch to go I unfortunately had to let it go.  I would rate this cigar 5 stars first third, 4 stars second thirds, and 2.5 to 3 stars third third.  I would like to try that one again.

QuoteDonM - 2/27/2011  8:50 AMOk, so I finished the third one this morning, here goes:Cigar A This cigar is well made with a medium brown wrapper, nicely done cap. Overall, a respectable cigar but by the flavor, I couldn't help but think this was an average mid priced cigarCigar BThis is a pretty rugged cigar in appearance, med brown wrapper, displaying some lumpy bumpy veins. I am guessing that it had some DOM in it with the cedar flavors  Cigar CThis cigar had the best presentation of the 3 for the blind reviews with a maduro wrapper and only minimal veins, very well constructed and smooth. So I am going to at least give a run at the rankings:Cigar A- MiddleCigar B- LowCigar C -HighNow Excel can embarrass me and let me know how I did

Don you get 1 pt for knowing the order of the cigars as far as price
goes. #1 was a Los Imperialistas Robusto (Nic Puro)  no. 2 was a "OneOff" (OR) Seoanes (Petit Corona)  #3 was a La Herencia Cubana Oscuro Fuerte Robusto!

Sure...

The first torpedo you smoked was a Padilla Habano Torpedo and was the mid range smoke.  The second big toro you had was a Cohiba Black Supremo on the top end.  I won't tell you what the third is till you smoke it and tell me what you though.  You don't have to review it, just tell me if you liked it was ambivalent, or hated it.
You get a point for identifying the med. priced stick, and you guessed that it was a man o' war, but while blended by the same guy was a different stick.  I don't know if this scores as a blender identification so I'd have to get a ruling from Don on that.  So best, I can tell, you've got 1 to 2 points at the moment.

Cigar #1 from Mr Cordell

This robusto has a nice dark wrapper with a triple cap.  It feels great - solid, but with a nice give.   It clips cleanly, offering a perfect draw, with just a little tug.  The taste is dark, earthy, with a little bit of sweet.

It burns very straight, with a great strong ash, tons of smoke.

The flavors are dark and rich, with no pepperiness.  There's some pleasant bitterness, like espresso, and a clean finish that hints of chocolate.  The flavors stay pretty consistent throughout.  It's super smooth, soft, round, with rich cocoa.

It's a high quality smoke, and the Nicaraguan-y flavors and triple cap suggests that it's a Pepin, even though it didn't have the peppery start.  I'd guess it's a San Cristobal, perhaps a Series JJ maduro.

Post by: BlackIrish on 05/06/2011 09:45 PM
Cordell #2 is a torpedo with a long tapered head, a colorado wrapper, and a slight box press.  The roll and feel are good, and so is the draw.

There's pepper at the start, but there's more than that.  There's also an underlying richness.  I wonder whether it's a DPG blue.  But it's got that slight box press, and I don't think the DPG blues have that.

The pepper recedes, and the richness emergers.  It's rich, and round,  The ash is noteworthy, strong and compact, and the burn line is very good.

As the smoke progresses I get notes of wood, cedar in particular. It gets smooth, round, more mellow.  The finish becomes less dry, less tannic, replaced by some nuttiness.  Almonds, maybe?

I'm not sure about this one.  The smooth richness made me wonder whether it might by an RyJ Reserva Real, but it seemed a little spicy at the start for that. Perhaps a Padilla Achilles torpedo?  or possibly a La Perla Habana?

Cordell #3 is a robusto with a dark maduro wrapper, very smooth, with an oily sheen.  The aroma from the foot is dark tobacco.

It slices well - nice cap.  The draw is excellent.  The light is effortless, the flavors dark sweet maduro, with no pepper at the beginning.

It continues with a great maduro profile, smooth, dark, sweetish, full bodied.  The burn is pretty good, with some wobbles, a small V, and a little bit of running, but it evens out.  The ash is quite white, though it could be a little tighter.

Not sure about this one either.  I thought it could be a Padron, but the wrapper seems too smooth for that.  A CAO Brazil, maybe?  Or a Torano Virtuoso?

All in all, I got three great cigars from Bob.  Thank you, sir.  Now please tell me what I smoked.
