Any of you home roasters make coffee blends with chicory? I just ordered some and want to try some different blends. Thanks!
I know back in the colonial days they used to mix chicory into coffee, and some places still do it, but I have no clue what the techniques are. I do know it makes for a real nice beverage though :-)
Nope never have but my father had mentioned a long time ago back in WW 2 they used it.
I was doing a New Orleans themed food night, and picked up some ground coffee that had Chicory added.
Historically, it was used by the poor to help stretch their coffee supply, and is still popular in Louisiana. It can be brewed on it's own as a caffeine free coffee substitute, or added to coffee in whatever proportion you like. Typically it's used with a dark French roast, up to about a 50/50 proportion.
Rebecca hit it spot on. I blend it in from time to time, and my personal preference is to mix one part chicory to two parts French roast coffee. :biggrin:
This sounds interesting. Is chicory something you can pick up at the grocery store?

Not very easily if you want pure chicory...at least it's hard to find here. I've had to order it off the internet in the past.

That sucks - I wonder if they would have it at a specialty store like Whole Foods or Trader Joes?

I guess it's possible... Considering that it's 6 hrs. from me to one of those type stores, I couldn't say... :confused:
Chicory is a root that is roasted and was historically added to stretch coffee. I know that there is a "mainstream" coffee that contains chicory at many main grocery stores, but I've read that it leaves a lot to be desired. I purchased a pound from Sweetmarias.com and want to experiment with some of the coffees that I roast. I've read that the typical mix is 1/3 chicory with 2/3 coffee. The chicory is water soluble so you don't need too much.
In any case, it was about $5 for 1 pound of chicory. Thanks, guys for your input! I look forward to hearing more, and will definately give you all a note about my experience!
I was looking for chicory awhile back, and the only places I found selling it were online. Trader Joe's did not carry it.

Bump from a chicory fan! I get this stuff from amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Frontier-Chicory-Granules-Roasted-package/dp/B00028OIVC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1331854480&sr=8-3 , and mix it with a high end coffee. I love the unique flavor from the chicory, very earthy and rich, a little bit of this stuff goes a long way in making a full bodied dark coffee. Also helps not getting as much of a caffeine buzz through the day.
You can buy chicory already pre mixed with coffee in Whole Foods, but I prefer to just mix it on my own so I know the chicory and coffee are both good stuff. The premixed stuff uses cheap coffee that shows, IMO.
Community Coffee has some great ground coffee with chicory. I accidentally ordered a crapton of it with a military overseas order and my buddy and I had enough for like 2 years. But, worth ordering a bag or two just to test the waters for what you're looking for... They're famous for their chicory blend.
I used to work with a guy who would bring coffee with chicory added to it...I really liked the taste even though it made it a bit stronger but it was a good taste nonetheless. There are so many interesting and great coffees out there that it's like our cigar habit...so many where you'll eventually get ahold of one that knocks it out of the park.
My favorite chicory blend is Cafe Du Monde Coffee & Chicory. I highly recommend trying it.
I love it when old threads are brought back! I'm still working through my pound of chickory and enjoy it with a pot a few times per month to mix things up...I think I'll put some in my third pot for today!
I grew up drinking Community coffee and have bought a bag here and there on the web. I wish they made K-Cups ;-)
I home roast and the place where I order my coffee from has chicory. I was thinking of trying it, but I usually brew shots of espresso and I heard it wasn't good in espresso.
