Humidor time: 217 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 69, foot - 62 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (9/10) Flavor: PLA gave a faint whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium/full profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, dark wood, leather, and spice. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing a bit through the first third after which the wood, spice, and pepper notes faded and a note of coffee came in and stuck around through the remainder. Not bad, overall, but it all missed my wheelhouse by a fair bit, especially after the first third. If the somewhat more interesting first third profile had persisted through the remainder, this would rate higher, but the flavors in the last two thirds were just kind of muted and didn't hold my interest. Strength was medium at best. (26/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first two thirds with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn continued wavily in the 2nd third, then got lopsided and a touch-up was needed. Things then proceeded uneventfully down to the nub with draw and smoke output remaining optimal throughout. (17/20) Overall impression: Another C-bid single, this one, and a bit of a disappointment, although after reading the previous reviews, it didn't really come as a surprise. Just kind of an average smoke, although it certainly looked pretty promising at the start. (28/35) Burn time: 1:21 Rating: 80

A sharply BPd perfecto, a dark brown wrapper, no veins & pressed oils. PLA leather & barn; PLT sl wine-y earth & wood; PLD moderately firm. A quick toast & light, a firm draw, an even burn & a sandy wood smoke. The draw eases as the tip burns in. Openers are leather, earth, a touch of orange peel & a bit of black pepper in mouth & nose. The 1/3 reveals a hint of unsweetened chocolate & there is an acidic wood note. The strength is medium. Some faint nuts & charcoal join in the back 1/2 but the wood acid note is disconcerting & there is no excitement. The body is low medium. Though the finish is smooth I don't feel the value for price is there.

Humidor time: 216 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 66, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A couple minor veins, a light sheen, box-pressed, and a soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was open. (9/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, leather, charred wood, spice, and a hint of something sharp and citrusy, maybe like black cherries. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing just a bit through the first third but otherwise staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was very flavorful and pretty close to my wheelhouse for a fuller blend. Strength was about medium. (33/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. (20/20) Overall impression: Another C-bid single, this one, and possibly the best Man O' War yet, at least according to my palate. Both flavors and construction were spot-on and this one is highly recommended for anyone who likes a flavorful, full-bodied smoke. (33/35) Burn time: 1:20 Rating: 95

By: druid (11/27/2023 10:00 AM)
A solid stick with a bit of shallow tooth, a dusty reddish-brown wrapper, no veins & light oils. PLA faint wood; PLT faint earth; PLD moderately easy. An easy toast & light, a moderately easy draw, an even burn, & a wood & earth smoke. A slightly iodine-y earth, some leather & only a hint of spice start. Wood notes- maybe oak & hickory- join early & start to build. The strength is medium plus. The wood continues to strengthen & slowly usurp the iodine note which it does past the 1/2. The last 1/3 is wood up front with earth. leather & a bit of black pepper behind. The finish actually picks up a bit of sweetness & the body is medium plus. Nice, but extinct since I'm pretty sure they're no longer made. (90)

Humidor time: 215 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 70, foot - 57 Appearance and construction: A few minor veins, a light sheen, an oval box-press, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (9/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a very spicy retro and notes of black pepper, leather, spice, and a hint of coffee. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors mellowing through the first third and the body receding towards medium/full. The coffee hint ramped to a full predominant note in the 2nd third with the black pepper fading to the background and the leather and spice also maintaining in the background through the remainder. Pretty tasty, overall, although it missed my wheelhouse by just a bit. Strength was about medium or a bit better. (30/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced an easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. Humidor time: 214 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 67, foot - 59 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of light wood, spice, and a hint of butter. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note and this was decently flavorful while not blowing my socks off with anything I haven't gotten before from similar blends. Strength was medium at best. (28/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, good smoke volume, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a cone. Draw and smoke output remained mostly optimal throughout. (19/20) Overall impression: Another C-bid single and a pretty good morning smoke although nothing amazing or unusual, flavor-wise. I'm a fan of this brand's other blends and was hoping this would be equally enjoyable, and it was pretty nice but not really anything to write home about. But I'd smoke it again and may pick it up in other vitolas as I see them. (29/35) Burn time: 1:34 Rating: 84

Humidor time: 213 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 70, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately firm pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single shallow V-cut and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of tobacco. The light gave a medium+ profile with a spicy retro and notes of wood, spice, and a hint of citrus. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors staying consistent throughout. No transitions to note but this was quite flavorful with just enough spice and that citrus hint to keep things interesting throughout. Strength was about medium. (32/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, thin smoke volume, and a wavy burn to start. I quickly gave it a 2nd shallow V-cut and then a single deep V-cut on top of the initial cut and this helped to bring smoke output to the low side of optimal shortly into the first third. The burn evened out through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. The burn continued a bit wavily but self-correcting through the remainder and down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained on the low side of optimal from the first third on. (16/20) Overall impression: This one came from C-bid as part of a batch of singles I got from them awhile back. Pretty good smoke and the first vitola I've had from this blend, which was pretty nice for a medium smoke. Construction could have been better as it was just a bit tightly packed resulting in a slightly restricted draw and reduced smoke output most of the way through. But, it was good enough to smoke again if I run across it in other vitolas. (30/35) Burn time: 1:10 Rating: 86

A firm BP, a dark flawless wrapper & a good oil sheen. PLA earth with a touch of molasses; PLT earth; PLD moderately easy. An easy toast & light, a moderately easy draw, a sharply even burn, & a spicy smoke. Openers are earth, coffee bean & a good dose of black pepper in mouth & nose; the retro is potent. In the 1/3 a very dark unsweetened chocolate comes on & the mouth spice drops off quite a bit. The strength is medium plus. Nearing the 1/2 the pepper in the mouth picks up a bit again. The profile & finish are smooth & flavorful & remain so throughout the smoke. The body is in the upper medium range. Excellent! (94)

Humidor time: 219 days Humidimeter reading: Head - 66, foot - 60 Appearance and construction: A few veins, a light sheen, and a moderately soft pack with no soft spots... Gave it a single clip with the guillotine and PLD was moderately open. (8/10) Flavor: PLA gave a whiff of rich tobacco. The light gave a full-bodied profile with a spicy retro and notes of black pepper, dark wood, leather, spice, and a hint of coffee. The spice in the nose faded after a few puffs with the other flavors quickly mellowing through the first third with the body receding towards medium territory. The black pepper faded almost completely. The body ramped back up towards medium/full in the 2nd third with the previous coffee hint ramping to a full predominant note and the other flavors staying in the background through the remainder. Lots of transitions in this one and it was all quite tasty and enjoyable. Strength was about medium. (32/35) ![]() Smoking characteristics: The light produced a moderately easy draw, smoke volume on the low side of optimal, and an even burn to start. The burn stayed even through the first third with the ash falling at 1 1/4" leaving a small cone. Following the ashing, I gave it a 2nd clip off the head and this helped to bring smoke output to optimal. The burn continued a bit wavily but self-correcting through the remainder and down to the nub. Draw and smoke output remained optimal from the 2nd third on. (19/20) Overall impression: This one came from Small Batch as one of their COTM selections awhile back. A fine smoke it was with both flavors and construction checking all the right boxes, and yep, I'd smoke it again. (32/35) Burn time: 1:12 Rating: 91

Rock solid, smooth. Medium dark brown wrapper, no veins & a light oil sheen. PLA wheat & barnwood; PLT wine cask; PLD moderately firm. A slightly long toast & light, a firm draw, an even burn, & a wheat & wood smoke. Dry wood & hay, & a light herb & pepper spice start things. This cigar has a tight draw & the strength is medium. A citrus-like tang enters in the 1/3 & overrides the wood for a bit. Hints of coffee bean & unsweetened chocolate come in the 2nd 1/3. The draw eases finally past the 1/2. In the finale the wood & coffee pick up, there is toast, & a caramel note tails on the smooth finish. The body is only a bit above medium. A very nice cigar. (92) |
