New Site Coming

Hi Folks.  This is actually now accelerated given my hosting provider did an upgrade this week that broke a lot of things on the site.  As some may be aware, I have been in the process of porting this site from the antique technology it has been on for the past 15 years to a more modern framework.  The development has been recently completed and I have been testing it for the past few weeks.  While I think I have caught all the issues, I wanted to do a bit more before releasing.  In any case, my old hosting provider has really made a mess of things for me and I am now in the need of moving more quickly to the new platform.

So the ask...for those that are somewhat savvy with web technologies, I am asking for volunteers to help with the testing by poking around the new site and seeing if they can find any show stoppers for cutting over to the new site.  Anything short of a serious show stopper will be put on a list for fixing.  The data at the new site was pulled over as of yesterday morning (Nov. 10).

If you are familiar with how HOSTS files work on a computer, feel free to test the new site by adding a couple of entries to your HOSTS file (On Windows: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts):
142.11.216.254 cigargeeks.com
142.11.216.254 www.cigargeeks.com

This will push you over to the new site for testing.  When you want to get back to this current site again, you'll need to remove those entries.
Keep in mind anything you do on the new site will be wiped out/replaced by the latest data from the current site prior to the final cutover.

Sorry for the hastiness of this, but unfortunately it seems necessary.

Cheers!

I can't say I'm an expert with web technology but I have been known to !@#%$ s**t up sometimes.  When I try to reach the IP address directly I get an error from the hosting company.

Yeah, it really requires HOSTS file entries on your computer for it to work correctly as you need to access via name not IP.  It won't be necessary when I do the real cutover, but while our name (cigargeeks.com) still points to the old IP, the HOSTS entry overrides it with the new IP.

Would love to have more folks out there banging on it though.

I'd give it a shot but I'm not familiar with editing the hosts file.

Upward and onward. I would love to help but computer technology is not my forte at all. Good luck.

Paul, I sent you a PM from tuck0411.  This is from my "tech guru" Gerry W.....I use a small developer system for Mac called AMPPS, and it has a Windows version also. With it I can automatically modify my HOSTS file back and forth very quickly to map between my Production website and my Development website. I make a list of changes in my Dev environment, test them, then package the changes and move them to my Prod environment. There are a couple of things I do to package the Dev changes and sync them to Prod. I've been doing it for years, so it's second nature now and I can sync both environments in about 20 to 30 minutes.

Paul, I sent you a PM from tuck0411.

Thanks, John.  I got back over here finally.  What a pain.  Going to the test site results in problems when trying to come back over here after changing your hosts file back.  I got redirected to a login page for "Plesk Web Hosting" when trying to come here.  Happened in two different browsers (Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome) and I'm now in Firefox, which I am not going to use to access the test site, for obvious reasons.  Anyway, just a heads up for anyone contemplating testing the new site - you may encounter the same problems I did when trying to come back here.

Just a head's up about the current site... There is a setting under your "My Account" settings for "Receive e-mail notifications when someone sends you a private message?"  If you had "yes" selected for this, it is no longer working, or at least that's been my experience just recently.  Probably one of the things that broke when Paul's web hosting provider changed whatever they changed.  So, for example, if you send a private message to another member who doesn't regularly log in, they are not going to be notified via email that they have a message waiting and you may not get a timely response.

Thanks Todd!  Yes, email is one of the things that they broke.  They are supposedly working on a fix but in my experience with them they never fix anything.  They leave it to me to figure out and rewrite code around their issues.  Really need to get over to the new site soon.

Along those lines, Todd has been instrumental in helping to identify issues and I am working through them.  Luckily the issues do not seem to bad so hopefully I'll get them worked out over the weekend.

Thanks again Todd!  Really appreciate the testing help.  Anyone else that wants to try the new site feel free.  I'll take all the help I can get.

What I do is open a new browser window in "InCognito" or "InPrivate" mode.  That basically makes it forget anything else it knew about you.  Hopefully that works ok for you.

Paul, I don't know diddly squat about computer stuff so I can't help with any of this. However, after an extended absence I intend to become active again and have enlisted a few diehards to help put some spark back into the Geeks. Please take me along when you switch to the new site because I don't know how to go about it.

I know this post is old, though thought better to start here rather than create another similar post thread.

@SenorPablo -
Enjoy the updated site, I know the difficulties & challenges of migration to a new tech platform, thanks to you and the support that made the migration occur.

I have a request that newline ("\n") are recognized/honored in the Notes in Humidor list view, as previous platform.

As example:
* previous platform list view of Humidor would show Notes like this

Quantity:     Pack of 10
Purchased at: Cigar Auctioneer
Shipped:      December 23, 2021
Lot Cost:     $28.00
TotalCost:    $32.98 (shipping cost was grouped)

* current platform list view of Humidor displays Notes like this
Quantity: Pack of 10 Purchased at: Cigar Auctioneer Shipped: December 23, 2021 Lot Cost: $28.00 TotalCost: $32.98 (shipping cost was grouped) Size: Robusto Ratings & Reviews: * Cigar Aficionado - 90,Dec 01, 2015
