Having lived in Fairbanks Alaska for just over 3 years lets just say you have to work at something to do! Well I have decided to make this a contest of my own to go along with it and something that I enjoyed playing with every year that I was there.

History:
For those of you that don't know There is a small town about 65 miles from Fairbanks Called Nenana, AK.
Each year they hold a competition to see when breakup season is going to officially start! By taking bets on the day, minute and second the tripod on the Tanana River is going to move

Large grooves are cut into the frozen Tanana River ice about 300 feet from shore. Volunteers lends their muscles to pull on ropes to stand a wooden tripod upright. Holes are drilled in the ice, allowing water to seep upwards, filling in the grooves to freeze the tripod in place. A watchtower erected next to the tripod holds the official clock of the most recent breakup.

Once the ice has thawed to the point where walking on it is no longer safe, a wire is attached from the watchtower on shore to the top of the tripod, and rigged up to a clock mechanism so that the clock will be stopped when the tripod moves 100 feet. Watchmen monitor from the time the clock is activated until the ice has gone out. A siren will alert the townspeople to the tripod's first movement.

When the tripod trips the clock, spring has officially arrived, and Interior Alaska's rivers are once more navigable. And someone is a lot richer ($338,000 to last years winners)

I'm going to fashion a Cigar Based Raffle following the same rules!

1. Each person sends in 1 cigar ($3-$5+ please we want the pot to be sweet) giving them 2 guesses they want to make on when the tripod will fall.
2. Number of guesses is unlimited and each member will post their guesses Month, Day, Hour, Minute and second. Guesses can be made up the minute the tripod falls. Any received after I will return to the sender.
3. I will use the official State of Alaska time given for when the alarm in Nenana, AK. was tripped to determine the closest guess and winners.
4.  Prizes:

1st place will win 50% of the total entries and a 10 pack provided by me
2nd place will win 25% of the total entries
3rd place will win 15% of the total entries
The remaining 10% I will write down all participants, number them and randomly select non winners to get packs as consolation prizes.

So you actually stand a chance to win 1 of 4 ways! Not bad odds really

Anyone interested? Sounds a little weird at fist but trust me is entertaining. Tens of thousands of people participate all over the world to see when a little stick in the middle of nowhere Alaska is going to fall! This has been a tradition since 1917.
There is detailed information form weather, ice reading, daily temp logs, historical data of when the ice has broken all the way back to the first competition in 1917. So you can make as wild or educated a guess you would like

Nice contest. I might have to get my hands wet.
But I really liked the name "Wish Stealer". It had a Native American ring to it. -Brlesq

A wise geek once told me that moving up from a daily smoke to a weekly or even bi-monthly smoke would be worth it, if I could learn how to appreciate a really really good cigar. -southernrun

Well since there is some interest a little more info!
- The 10 I put in will also be in the $3-$5 Probably a little more with 1 Surprise rare stick over $15.
- Competition probably will go on well into April just depends on the weather and when the tripod drops.
- Some people try and make this a science ie. ice thickness, daily temps etc. Have tried to give you the 2 main links to find all the info you need if you go that rout.
- Broke down winnings so there would be several people to win. Winners 50% comes out FIRST (only fair) so they have te biggest diversity of cigars. Thought runner ups made it more interesting for more people. That last 10% will just total them up and depending on how many there are divide into groups of 3-5, number people then to keep it fair have the contest winner pick the numbers. Then I will make sure winning get out in I would think 3 days max.

- ALL rules for the real contest on the link at the top will be followed and that time will determine the winner.
- No limit to the number of guesses 1 cigar = 2guesses if you want to just toss in 5 packs or same cigars is fine I will just spread them out so the winners get the biggest variety of sticks possible.
- Please give the Age of your cigar if know if not then it's ok.
- Tips are cool but in no way expected or required.

SO last thing if your still not following me then please look at the real Nennana I Classic at this link

Good luck everyone

For me really was a great area! They work hard around there to give you something to do. Went to the Ice Festival over in Nenana every year!

Last years winners got $338,000
