Nice read and I don't blame him for not wanting to go commercial.

My brother-in-law brews his own stuff, and it is very good.  I'd try my hand at it, but my wife would kill me for starting another expensive hobby.

I don't think it is a hobby at this point - its a food stuff. In Germany it is considered a food group - smart folks. :dancing:

That guy has a nice set up but I agree with most of the comments under the article. There is no way he only has $3500 invested.
Maybe it's like becoming one with the cigar. You lose yourself in it, everything fades away, your worries, your problems, your thoughts. They fade into the smoke, and the cigar and you are at peace. ~Raul Julia

I guess the big question here is whether or not your wife is a beer drinker...

Oh baby! I want one of these set-ups! 3500$ is WAY too low for that set-up!

I tried my hand at brewing when I was in my 20s. It didn't take me long to appreciate a good beer brewed by someone else.

Home brewing is the way to go!  Once you understand the basics and get a stater kit you are off and running!  You can get a simple or as crazy as you want!  You can make your beer the way YOU want it!  I have even brought home home some fresh apples from a day of picking at the orchard and took a few to make a batch of homemade Apple Cider!  the second time I did it i added fresh rasberries to the secondary fermentation and that was great stuff.  didnt last long! lol!

I prefer brewing mead, but it makes an awful mess.

If I can get that setup for $3500 then show me where to sign up! That is sweet! I only could hope to have something like that some day.

Great article for a brew day. I'm actually in the middle of brewing a Black IPA. smells awesome! Damn, I love homebrew!

I started homebrewing years ago, its cheaper than buying craft brews and better tasting.  I make 5 or 10 gallon batches at a time keg it and its ready for drinking.  I made a Smoked Russian Stout that paired up nicely with a Cohiba a few months ago, and currently on tap is a refreshing summer ale with lots of centenniel and cascade hops, this goes great also with a mild to medium cigar.  You can get into the basic brew setup for around $100 and at $40-$60 for 5-10 gallons of good beer you can't go wrong.  What you do is find a beer the wife likes and make a replica or similiar then she's hooked also.  We have friends that brew and he makes a "Hot Momma Hefeweizen" for her.
