Going to have to wait until next month to be able to get one, but is there a v-cutter that anyone would recommend over others?

If you have $30-40 I would go with Xikar. http://www.xikar.com/products/cutters/vx-v-cut/

If you just want to try one out, for $4 I would go for this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/V-Cut-Guillotine-Combo-Cigar-Cutter-54-Ring-Gauge-Free-Shipping-/220982071690?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33738ed18a#ht_615wt_1270

I'm a huge fan of Xikar. Plus you can't beat the lifetime guarantee on them

Here's another question for you guys as I've heard it both ways. When you cut, do you leave the cello on?
-Daimon

lubrix

I always take the cello off when making the cut.

That's interesting...is there a reason you want to keep the cello on when you cut?  And, pardon my n00bisms, but what are the features/benefits to v-cut vice regular cut?  I've only used my Xikar which seems to work well.
Cheers!

I agree... the V cut is come to be my favorite and Yes it is nice on torpedoes also. However 1 thing to add is that according to some and even a poster that LFD put out you should punch the chisels. see pics below.

Well it wouldn't let me upload the poster from LFD but here is the link

It really is personal preference and what you like i.e. amount, concentration of smoke etc... Your local B&M should have multiple cutters for you to use and try out. (usually around the register for when you check out)

I've been using the Xikar Scissors for the last few months and I absolutely love them. They let me get within millimeters of the cap so I don't have to deal with unraveling later on. After everyone in this thread mentioning the love of a v-cut, I may have another purchase to make...

Also, I always take the cello off before I cut, I've never heard of anyone leaving it on until now to be honest.

I'm pretty much a straight cut guy though I've really got no experience w/ a V cut, so I'll have to give that a try.  Mostly I figure any kind of cut/punch that makes the cigar smokable is a good one.

I have a Cuban Crafters double guillotine cutter as a back up.  I've had it for years.

Cuban Crafters guarantees it it for life and they actually replaced it about 4-5 years ago for me.  Not bad for $15 on sale.

Daimonrunge

I have to say I am liking the punch now a lot better than the cutter. Still no experience with the v-cut, but I'll be sur to chime in when I do. As far as leaving the cello on for the cut, I have no evidence that it's better, just some people who have told me the cut is cleaner with it left on. It's not been my experience, but apparently the thought is out there.

I had a chisel a few days ago.  I V cut it along the length of the tip and it worked just fine.

I had another cigar this weekend, that when I look at the the V cut I could see tar starting to bead up on the tip.  I am glad it wasn't a strait cut or I would have been tasting it.

Do you folks find that the V cut or the punch does better on the draw/smoke or flavor of the cigar vs. a guillotine cut?

I have always been a guillotine person, but had a few v-cut when I first got started - the B&M store I went to for a while had a wooden tabletop cutter that was fairly awesome and it vcut - but I don't remember any difference in the flavor or draw.

I have asked for that stainless steel tabletop that you folks had up on here, but I don't know if it'll happen ::grin::

Just curious if you have a reason for the v cuts or the punches. Thanks for the info - y'all have turned the cigar experience into so much more for me

FWTW, I love my Xikar STK (double guillotine) and really dislike any punch cuts.  V-Cuts are trendy, but meh.

Ditto for this geek too. I have seen the Xikar V cutter on cbid for around 28 bucks. I talked with the local Xikar rep back in April, and he told me they were coming out with other colors near the end of this year, if you like some "pop" with your cutters!    :bigthumbs:

there are quite a few geeks that swear by the v-cut. not as many punchers i dont think. i personally still snip with a double guillotine myself, only because i dont have much v-cut experience. to me a punch cut gets hot and bitter much faster than a clean snip. i was always told the larger the orffice (is that bad spelling?)the better the cut, but im by no means an expert as some others here are.
why isnt phonetic spelled like it sounds?

V-Cutter if nothing else, is quite popular ATM.  Every time I read about folks V-cutting Torpedos I have to chuckle.

that does seem kinda funny doesnt it

Almost as hilarious as punching a chisel in the side LOL.

V cutting a torpedo works well.  V cut also works on the chisel.  Just run the cut all the way along the top and you are good to go.

Still chucking about the V-Cutting a Torpedo, but I can see a V-Cut working well on a Chisel -- no different than using a double guillotine, or cutting it off with a jackknife or, hell, nipping it off with your teeth (I have done all three of the latter cuts w/o issues).

IMO, you can't beat the Palio cutter. Whenever the blades get a bit dull, I return it to the B&M for a complete replacement...no questions asked, for life. Cuts perfectly, and feels very solid and comfortable in the hand.
