I remember my pappy always smoking a pipe and rolling his own prince albert. I may have to look into taking it up.

Kyle- I like your collection!

I have been smoking pipes for a few years now. My father got me into it on his annual visits to the south. I currently have a Peterson 312 (it has the p-lip stem), and a Turkish meerschaum that my dad brought back when he visited the country this spring. Both pipes make for a great smoke. I plan to pick up a cob pipe sometime, just to say I have tried one.

As for tobacco, I have not tried any of the kinds that Kyle and Sam are showing off, so have no idea what they really are.  Of the few Virginia baccy's I have tried, none of them really did it for me.  I am, however, hooked on pretty much anything with a lot of black cavendish in it. I particularly enjoy the black cherry cavendish. Not sure what kind of pipe smoker that makes me, but it is what I like so far. Maybe I should try broadening my horizons some.

Tonight I pulled out the 312 and filled it with Stokkebye's Black Majesty. Nice smoke. Stokkebye's is generally pretty good. I have had a couple McClelland blends that I liked a lot too.  It all came from smokingpipes.com.

Have you ever tried Erinmore?  A totally different smoking experience (sounds like an ad), I think it's from Ireland.  I have always liked three cheaper American brands myself, Half & Half is very nice, I always like Velvet, and the last bag I bought was a bargain brand and great stuff called Blenders Gold, I think my friend from Florida bought it for me at Walgreens.  Guys might laugh at my choices but all three are great pipe tobacco choices I'd say.

Just smoked a bowl of GL Pease Montgomery in a Missouri Meerschaum American Patriot.   A good morning blend, mostly Virginia with a touch of Kentucky tobacco.

I love Montgomery in a cob!  My preferred cob is the Missouri Pride, but I'm with you on the Montgomery.  Blew through a tin a while back and loved it.  I have a single unopened tin that's been aging for 16 months.  I'm not sure how long I'll let it cellar.  As far as Virginias go, I got really into the Stokkebye Twist Flake for a while.  Their Navy Flake was great too.  Blakeney's Best Bayou Slices from McClelland was another I smoked a lot of.  I like that blend because the Perique is more prominent than in other blends.  It wasn't overpowering, but it had a nice tang that I just couldn't get enough of.

I can't wait for winter to get here so I can get out some G.L. Pease Westminster or Odyssey.  I love me some Latakia.

EDIT: Oh, and if anybody wants to look through my meager cellar, just go here: http://tobaccocellar.org/open.php?cellar=1403

Hey, pro-level ratings in your website ..... I love it and those sound pretty exotic, MIKE

Anyone tried Rattray's Marlin Flake or Hal O' the Wynd?  In my short time pipe smoking, I really enjoyed those.

Ok - if I were to take the plunge, can anyone recommend a cheap pipe that smokes well.  Also, any tips on keeping the dang things lit?  To be honest, I gave up on it because I found it was too much work.

missouri meerchaum cobs are cheap and are generally good smokers that dont take long to break in. to keep it lit... that takes time and patience to get the technique down, but you will get the feel for it. other than that, try drying your baccy. that pipedia link i posted has lots of good tips and advice.

I still puff away at my corn cob every now and again at work.  Just finished off an old bag of tobacco, so I"m done smokin the pipe till I get some more baccy.
There were some good links and info on baccy, I'll have to try some good stuff.  Any thoughts on filters?  I know I don't use one, but I smoke pipes with another fella at work and he swears by them.

filters? we don't need no steeenking filters.

Re: filters, I use them in my cobs.  However, I take the poker on my pipe tool and shove it through the filter before installing it.  This knocks down the paper baffles inside of the filter, so you basically get a (near) unfiltered smoke without the insanely loose draw you would get if you were to leave the filter out of the equation entirely.

so i noticed there really isn't alot of activity here in the pipe fourm. perhaps we can remedy that. assuming that there are indeed pipers still in the crowd. what say ye?

My latest purchases have been the Frog Morton series from McClelland, four brands in all. I love the original and am about to try the others.

Filters keep the hot gasses from shriveling the tongue. Since many of us are married and require permission to smoke, and our tongues are the gateways to permission, we either keep our tongues in functional order or quit smoking, which also repairs the tongue.

The secret I discovered for keeping a pipe lit is knowing when to tamp the tobacco. If smoke production drops off too much or the draw becomes too open, tamp while drawing. As long as you don't get the draw too tight, it will keep right on burning.

I've only found not using a filter to be possible with my Turkish hand-carved Meerschaum. It seems to cool and filter the smoke by itself. If you use a tobacco with a strong bite, like Mac Baren pipe tobacco, nothing will help you except puffing very very slowly.

Oh yes, every cob I own (and I own more than 10) has been purchased from that website.  The service is top notch and they ship quickly.  They get my highest recommendation.

Prices are a little better and you can pick up some baccy.

I have ordered from Mars for years and they are excellent. Only one time did I have a proublem (they forgot to put a tin of baccy in the box)
I E-mailed them and within an hour they had the tin shipped and when it arrived it was a 8 ounce tin insted of the 2 ounce tin I ordered. I E-mailed them
back and they said the 2 ounce tins were sold out but keep the 8 ounce tin at no extra charge!
